LA VERNE, Cali. -- The George Fox Bruin softball team traveled to La Verne in California to compete against the Leopards—defeating them 9-4 in the first game and a 7-4 win in the second game.
How It Happened – Game One
The Bruins had a rough start in the first three innings as they were down by four runs. But all of that ended when
Jordyn Relethford homered as
Brooke Riggins scored a run with
Suzy Nichols right behind her, scoring a run as well—3-4.
That inning awakened a fire in the Bruins—in the top of the fifth,
Bethany Wilkes hit an RBI single down the infield line and
Sharon Tomei advanced to third;
Charlotte Brooke scored a run just in time to tie the score, setting La Verne in a panic. Fox wasn't finished though as
Nicole Campa hit an RBI single to second base while
Morgan Palmer and Tomei scored, bringing the score up to 6-4. This was only half of what the Bruins completed in the fifth inning though when shortly after, Sophomore
Kiley Harris homered, driving home
Gianna Baca and Campa—the score launched forward for Fox 9-4. Neither team scored any runs in the last two innings, leaving the Bruins with a clutch first game win.
How It Happened – Game Two
The Bruins were pumped to play a second game when right off the bat, Tomei doubled to left center while
Sydney Sandifer advanced to third and
Tinley Taylor scored a run. That wasn't all though as Wilkes doubled to left center for Tomei and Sandifer to score two more runs each—leaving the Leopards in the dust 3-0.
Eventually, La Verne tied the score after scoring two runs in the bottom of first and third, but the Bruins fought harder for their place when Harris homered, advancing the score 4-3 in the top of the fourth inning. Then, in the top of fifth, Wilkes homered while the Leopards struggled to gain control. The Bruins were back at it again when Palmer and Brooke both scored runs in the top of the sixth inning from an RBI double from
Brooke Riggins giving them the 7-3 lead. The Leopards homered once in the bottom of seventh, but couldn't quite catch up as Fox won with a 7-4 score.
