NEWBERG, Ore. -- George Fox dropped their first match of the season 7-0 to the Whitman Blues.
How it Happened
The Bruins came out strong in doubles play, winning one of the three matches to start their day. All of the matches were competitive, and the Bruins put up a fight against the conference-leading Blues.
Sophie Denham and
Shanah Denham were the sole victors of the afternoon, winning 6-4 in their doubles match.
Kalli Wiker and
Riley Bobkiewicz teamed up against a tough Whitman duo of Teleya Blunt and Ilina Jha in the No.1 doubles spot, dropping their match 6-1. The tiebreaker for the doubles point was a close one, but the Blues secured it as
Arianna Rader and Cassey hitch got beat 6-4.
The singles matches also saw some tight matches. Bobkiewicz had the best match of the day, winning the first set 6-1, before dropping the next two 6-2, 11-9 to finish out the match. Wiker had the opportunity to play the No. 44 ranked singles player in all of DIII, but ended up dropping her match 6-0, 6-1 to Blunt.
The Denham sisters both ended up dropping their matches 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 3 and No. 4 singles spots, sealing the win for the Blues. Whitman finished the sweep as
Abigail Bond and
Juhree Kizziar dropped their matches 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1 respectively.
Coach's Thoughts
"Everyone played well but we didn't win enough of the big points during the match," said Bruins head coach
Rick Cruz. "It's a match we definitely can use to get better moving forward."
What Happens Next
The Bruins stay at home to face Whitworth tomorrow, March 2nd at 10:00 am, with hopes of rounding out their weekend on a positive note.
