TUCSON, Ariz. -- In a perfect sunny spring morning, the Bruins found a way to win yet again, beating Augsburg University 14-8 in a back and forth shootout.
How it Happened
Freshman Lucas Plennert got the start on bump today and rifled off two strikeouts to begin his campaign. Despite the hot start, he got into some trouble in the first, giving up the first run of the game to the Auggies.
The Bruins bounced back immediately, getting on the board thanks to a
Gabe DeBenedetto triple - his first of the year.
Shayde Koga added to the run tally, sending home DeBenedetto in the very next at bat with a single to center field.
After the Auggies found their way around the diamond yet again in the top of the third, a flurry of singles gave the Bruins yet another run in the bottom of the inning.
Carson Coulter got on base with a single, advancing to second on an error by Augsburg's O'Connor out in left field, and
Garrett Strube sent him home with a single of his own.
DeBenedetto stayed hot with a bunt single in the fourth, rounding the bases in due time and scoring due to a balk from Manny Weiss. The Bruins carried a 5-2 lead heading into the top of the fifth.
Augsburg struck back immediately, taking their first lead of the game in the top of the fifth. The poured on four runs as the Bruins found themselves down 6-5. They extended their lead to three after runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings made it 8-5.
That lit a fire in the Bruins, as they poured in a whopping seven runs in the bottom of the seventh. Everyone got in on the action, as Brennen Bates,
Noah Takayama, DeBenedetto,
Evan Balingit, and Coulter all drove in runs. Highlighting this inning was DeBenedetto and Coulter, as DeBenedetto recorded his second triple of the day and Coulter smashed a two-run home run down the left field line.
Just for good measure Fox brought in two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it 14-8. DeBenedetto stayed hot with his fourth hit and fifth RBI of the day, sending Bates home, and Koga capped it off with a sac fly to score
Berkley Reents.
Top Performers
Five Bruins finished with multiple hits, with Balingit and DeBendetto both recording four. Coulter knocked in a 2 RBI home run, and Bates went 3-5 in his second collegiate game.
