SPOKANE, Wash. — The Bruins played a contested match against the Whitworth Pirates today, bringing a 5-2 victory back to Newberg.
How it Happened
In the doubles matches, it all came down to the No. 2 match to decide the victor.
Lars Schmassmann and
Ikuho Ebisu kept up their solid doubles play, winning the first match 6-3. Whitworth bounced back in the No. 3 doubles match, evening the score 1-1 after a 6-2 victory over
Jackson Whittaker and Joe Vece. Whitworth got the last laugh after an intense No. 2 match, though, as
Zach Moore and
Keita Shoji dropped the match in a tie breaker 7(8) - 6(6).
In singles play, the Bruins won five of the six matches to secure the victory. Schmassmann played well in the No. 1 singles match, winning 6-4, 7(7) - 6(4) to set the tone for the rest of the afternoon. Moore put up a great fight as the No. 2, but ended up losing 6-3, 6-4 for Whitworth's second and final point of the day.
The Bruins swept the final four matches to leave the Whits 1-1.
Ikuho Ebisu won 6-3, 7(7) - 6(5), Shoji won 6-4, 6-2, and Whittaker won 7(7) - 6(4), 6-2. Hernandez capped off the day in a thriller, winning 5-7, 6-0, 1(10) - 0(4) and boosting the Bruins to a 5-2 match victory.
