LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Several competitive matches bring unfortunate results for the men's tennis team this evening, as the Bruins drop their match against Occidental College 7-0.
How It Happened
Keita Shoji and
Zach Moore got the ball rolling for the Bruins, winning their No. 2 doubles match 6-4 in a wire-to-wire win.
Jackson Whittaker and
Luis Hernandez came in next, dropping their match 6-2 in the No. 3 spot, setting up a winner-take-all No. 1 match to decide the doubles point. The set was pure cinema, with
Lars Schmassmann and
Ikuho Ebisu forcing the match into a tie-breaker. They unfortunately dropped the tie-breaking set 7(7) - 6(4) and the Tigers took an early 1-0 lead.
The Tigers continued to roll in the singles matches, securing all six victories by a tight margin. The majority of matches either went three sets or were squeaked out by Oxy. Shmassmann played in one of the three-set matches, winning the first set 6-1 before dropping the next two 6-2, 7-6 and eventually losing in an intense tie-breaker.
Zach Moore put up a fight in the No. 2 spot, losing a close one 6-4, 6-3 to Occidental's Ace Andres. The third singles match was decided by yet another tie-breaker in the second set, with Ebisu dropping the match 6-4, 7(10) - 6(7). Shoji and Hernandez finished up 6-3, 6-0, and 6-4, 6-4 respectively, and Whittaker capped the evening off with a wild 4-6, 6-3, 1(10) - 0(4) loss in the final match of the evening.
At the end of the day, the Bruins had four extremely close matches go the other way, with the Tigers taking advantage and securing the 7-0 victory.
