Bruins Drop Road Game in Claremont

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- In the second game of their two-game California road trip, the George Fox women's lacrosse team lost, 23-8, against a talented Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas' team.

How It Happened
The Athenas got off to a fast start in the first quarter, scoring six unanswered goals before the Bruins' Morgan Maxfield ended the drought off an assist from Claire Abraham with seven minutes left in the first quarter. Noami Rauch scored three minutes later, to bring the deficit to 6-2, however, CMS responded with three more goals in the final four minutes of the quarter to up their total to nine. Merrick Gibson scored with 2:06 left in the first frame to give the Bruins three goals in the first, and the score going into the second quarter was 9-3.

Claremont's offense continued in the second quarter, as they got seven more shots to find the back of the net in the frame. Abraham and Jasmine Uresti scored goals in the quarter (Uresti scored with just under nine minutes left, and Abraham with 1:45), to make the score 16-5 at the half, the largest halftime deficit the Bruins had seen all season.

The Bruins were able to bounce back defensively in the third quarter, allowing CMS to score just two goals in the entire frame, however, the GFU offense was unable to go on a run, scoring just three goals themselves. The goals came from Sasha Thayer, Rauch, and Jenna Clark, with Maxfield picking up assists on the goals of Thayer and Clark. Even if it wasn't the offensive output the Bruins probably needed, they still managed to outscore the Athenas' offense, making the third quarter the best quarter for GFU in the game. At the end of the third, the score was 18-8, with the Bruins down.

GFU would be shut out in the final quarter of the day, as the Athenas scored five goals while their goalie, Lyla Johnston, had a handful of saves in the final minutes to keep GFU off the scoreboard. The quarter ended a tough day for the Fox offense, who ended the day with 8 goals on 13 shots on goal. As the clock hit zero, the Athenas walked away with a 23-8 defeat of GFU.

Top Performances
Naomi Rauch led the Bruins in scoring with two goals on as many shots, while Morgan Maxfield had four assists and Cipriana Flores picked up five ground balls.

What It Means
