LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- In a stark contrast to their first day in Georgia, the George Fox women's volleyball team dropped a pair of games to solid competition in Southern Virginia and Covenant, losing each game 3-0.
How It Happened -- GFU vs. Southern Virginia
The Bruins had their hands full with an NCAA Tournament team in Southern Virginia, but stayed close in the opening stages of the first set. A block by
Lexi Baer and
Allaire Gilder gave Fox an early 4-3 lead, and a
Gracie Bearden kill had the Bruins in front, 9-7. The teams traded points until the Knights pulled out GFU's patented move the day prior — a big six-point run to take control of the game. SVU went on to win the set, 25-19.
The second set started well with an ace from
Mikaila Kronholm, but the Knights countered with a massive eight-point run to snag an 11-3 lead. Rather than back down, though, the Bruins embarked on a big run of their own, scoring eight consecutive points thanks to big plays from Gilder and
Addison Goff. The game wildly swung back the other way, with five straight points going to the Knights. Though Fox got within two, 21-23, thanks to a pair of SVU attack errors, they couldn't bridge the gap, dropping the set, 22-25.
Southern Virginia pulled away early once again in the third set, with a 9-2 run giving them an 11-6 lead. Playing their third game in less than 24 hours, Fox wasn't able to respond, with the Knights taking the game with a 25-15 third-set win.
How It Happened -- GFU vs. Covenant
The Scots pounced on the Bruins early, scoring the first five points in the game and jumping out to an insurmountable 16-3 lead. Fox lost the first set, 8-25. The Bruins never led in the first two sets, with Covenant taking another big lead early on, 9-3. While the Bruins lost the second set, 15-25,
Jordan Hahn was the bright spot, totaling three kills.
The third set saw GFU take their first lead of the game, taking a 2-0 advantage thanks to a Baer kill and a Bearden ace. Fox fought hard in the early stages of the game, trailing just 9-10 after a back-and-forth beginning to the set. Back-to-back kills from Baer kept the Bruins within reach, with a service ace from Goff tying the game, 19-19. The Bruins couldn't snag the lead, though, with Covenant scoring six of the final seven points to win the set, 25-20.
