BEAVERTON, Ore. — The Bruins men's tennis team opened their weekend of dual duels with a matchup against Division I Portland State, eventually falling 7–0 to the Vikings.
How It Happened
Hungry to open the season with a competitive battle against the green and white, the Bruins looked to repeat what they accomplished in 2022 by taking down their northwest neighbors. However, unfamiliar with last year's contest, the Bruins were ousted without taking home a single point to show for the day.
Ikuho Ebisu and
Keita Shoji opened the day with a doubles match versus the Viking duo of Luca Prino and Luke Lu, ending with a 6–2 final. This result set the tone for what would be a dominant performance from Portland State. In the second match,
Aiden Cruz and
Zach Moore tried to take control by winning two sets but couldn't push through the sixth set against a strong No. 2 doubles opponent for PSU.
Luis Hernandez and
Joseph Vece ended in similar fashion, claiming only one game in a 6–1 result.
In the singles matches, Cruz looked poised to claim the first match of the day for the Bruins against Ignacio Ruiz. After dropping the first set 6–0, Cruz rallied back with a gutsy 7–6 comeback to force a final set. Despite the building momentum, Ruiz took control, ending with a 7–3 finish.
The other singles matches showed fewer glimmers of victory throughout, with Moore losing 6–2, 6–1; Hernandez falling short 6–2, 6–1; and Vece yielding both sets 6–1, 6–0.
Bernardo Martinez and
Jayden Lovingfoss both tallied one-game wins in their two-set losses of 6–1, 6–1 to conclude the day.
Overall, the Bruins fought hard against a competitive Portland State squad, which should help the team shake off some returning rust before heading into conference competition.
