Box Score Newberg, Ore. — The Bruins men's tennis team concluded its weekend contests with a 4-3 victory at home against its first conference opponent of the year, Lewis & Clark.
How It Happened
The Bruins looked to bounce back from Friday's loss against Portland State with a statement win against the River Otters to propel them to an even record for 2026. After a strong doubles showing and tight singles matches, Fox gave Lewis & Clark a back-and-forth battle until the end before claiming the day.
The action started with the doubles duo of
Bernardo Martinez and
Joseph Vece. The pair lost only two games against its opponent, downing the Otts 6-2 and allowing
Zach Moore and
Aiden Cruz to take home the doubles point of the day after winning their matchup 6-3.
Moore started the singles matches by dropping the first set 7-6 after losing the tiebreaker 7-4. This proved to be the only close call for Moore, as he then posted commanding wins of 6-3 and 6-4 in the following sets to give the Bruins their second point of the day.
Noah Sutin of Lewis & Clark then earned the win against
Luis Hernandez in two sets, 6-2, 6-0, giving his team its first point of the day before
Keita Shoji decided to end his duel quickly against Kai Wills, 6-1, 6-2.
Ikuho Ebisu pushed his match to a close second set after losing the first, 6-3, and the second, 7-5.
The closest and longest competition of the day came between Martinez and Lewis & Clark's Landon Cronin. The first set ended in a tiebreaker, with Martinez claiming it 7-4, before dropping the second in the same manner. The final set was decided 10-8, with Cronin taking home L&C's third point of the day.
Cruz became the deciding matchup against Wade McDermott and secured the final point for victory with an impressive 6-2 first set before facing a tougher second set, 6-4.
Overall, the Bruins earned an impressive victory that demonstrated the grit and grind needed to compete in the Northwest Conference and should serve them well going forward.
