Game Preview: Bruins Look to Steady the Ship in Bounce-Back Game vs. Puget Sound

10/20/2026 4:53:00 PM

NEWBERG, Ore. -- The George Fox football team is ready for a get-right game.

Fox began the season 3-0 for just the second time ever, but has dropped their last three games against the top three projected teams in the Northwest Conference. In the past two games, though, the Bruins have been competitive — GFU has held a lead in the third quarter in losses to Whitworth and Lewis & Clark.

Now the Bruins will face off against Puget Sound, a team that has won two straight games in their own right. The Bruins, however, have won their previous two matchups against the Loggers by a combined 51 points, including a 48-23 homecoming win over PS in 2026.

Quarterback JJ Leman passed for a touchdown and ran for an additional three in the win, and is listed as the starter for the Bruins in week seven. Leman split time with Austin Ramsey in the GFU's previous matchup against the River Otters, with the pair combining for over 300 yards and two touchdowns. While Ramsey is listed as the backup, he did play the entire second half for the Bruins against Lewis & Clark.

On the line, Kyle Martin, who missed snaps against Lewis & Clark, is listed as the starting center in the Bruins' two-deep, with Tyler Ragan returning to the backup role. Martin is joined by his usual men up front in Toby Esqueda, Rylan McGraw, Miky Amare, and Sean Brewster.

Out at receiver, Karsen Denault continues to be a pass-catching machine. The sophomore is one of the most dynamic players in all of Division III and is third in the NCAA with 886 receiving yards. Denault has over 100 yards in five of the six games in 2026, while fellow starter Bupe Chisanga Jr. earned his first 100-yard game with 104 receiving yards against L&C. Kaelan Frey and Raiden Gonzales round out the pass catchers for Fox.

The running back position has been an interesting one for the Bruins over the season. Brody Snyder is listed as the GFU starter on the two-deep, with Damien Ehlers as the backup. However, Lyal Viers has also worked his way into the back rotation for the Fox offense — the freshman led the team in rushing yards one week prior, and recorded his first career touchdown on a 37-yard run.

Defensively, the Bruins have the same 11 starters as the previous game. On the line, Jacob Erickson, Kuyper Assink, Tyven Self-Gomes-Kealakai, and Kaden Raever will start. The quartet combined for 15 tackles against Lewis & Clark, but was held without a sack for the first time since September 2024. They'll look to get back on track against the Loggers, a team which they had six sacks against in 2025.

At the linebacker position, Mika Petaia and Duke Alderete-Labuguen are slated to start their seventh game of the season. Alderete-Labuguen had one of the Bruins' two TFLs against the River Otters, while Petaia had two tackles. Freshman backup LB Kanui Iokia has recorded a tackle in each of the Bruins' past three games.

Ben Nuss headlines a defensive backfield after his first two career interceptions. Nuss is one of six players to have a pick on the season; after two straight seasons of just seven interceptions in 10 games, Fox has 10 INTs on the year — already the most since 2022. Zak Holsey, Ty Borde, Eli Miller, and Austin Harrison are on the two-deep to start alongside Nuss.

Meanwhile, Puget Sound has put together their best two-week stretch in years. After a 0-3 start, the Loggers have won their past two games — their first win streak since 2019. PS defeated Pacific Lutheran for the first time in six seasons before beating Willamette, 42-17.

A big part of that has been the play of quarterback Brady Beck. The sophomore has started all five games the Loggers have played, and has thrown for 1,081 yards, nine touchdowns, and four interceptions — but over the last two Puget wins, Beck has thrown for 527 yards and six touchdowns.

The Loggers are a balanced team offensively, with no players rushing or receiving for over 300 yards on the season. Kasey Williams is fresh off a breakout game against the Bearcats, recording 155 yards and three scores in the game, while Jonah Wilson ran for 103 yards in the same game.

On the defensive side, Peyton Damasiewicz leads the team in tackles, but Tyler Evars is perhaps the strongest player defensively. A two-time All-NWC Honorable Mention athlete at defensive back, Evars has forced one fumble and intercepted two passes, with both INTs coming in his team's win over the Lutes.

Another strength of the Logger attack is kicker/punter Thomas Goeglein. The junior has been named NWC Special Teams Player of the Week once in 2026, and has missed just two kicks on the season (one FG and one PAT), and averages 40.8 yards per punt.

Each team has something to prove come Saturday. For the Loggers, it could be their first three-game win streak since 2018. For the Bruins, it's a chance to get back on track as they aim for their first winning season since 2022.

Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 1:00 pm. Live stats and live stream links are available on the GFU Athletics website. Tickets for the game are not available for mobile purchase, but are $10 for adults and $7 for youth/seniors on-site.
