Newberg, Ore. — The Bruins men's tennis team began their weekend with a 5-2 win against Willamette.
How It Happened
A hot streak is sure to follow the Bruins after taking down back-to-back conference opponents. Fox has continued on an upward trajectory following their loss to Portland State and demonstrated strong wins in their games against the Bearcats.
Doubles action included a 6-0 sweep from
Ikuho Ebisu and
Zach Moore on Court 1 and
Bernardo Martinez and
Keita Shoji losing by the same score, 6-0, on Court 2. On Court 3,
Luis Hernandez and
Aiden Cruz were pushed to their limits and took home the Bruins' second doubles victory, 7-5, giving the Bruins the doubles point for the day.
Singles saw Moore hold down Court 1 for the Bruins, winning both his sets, 6-2, 6-3. On Court 2, Shoji tried to bounce back from his doubles loss by taking his singles opponent to three sets. The Tokyo native won the first set, 6-3, before dropping the next two, 6-1, 6-3. Ebisu then took home a closely contested two-set matchup versus Sohnosuke Sakaguchi, 6-3, 7-5. Cruz won his competition on Court 4, 6-3, 6-3, giving the freshman his second singles win of his career.
Joseph Vece captured his first singles win of the season, going 6-3 in set one and an identical 6-3 in set two on Court 5.
Jayden Lovingfoss closed out Court 6 with a formidable two-set effort but fell short in both, 6-3, 6-4.
The Bruins are now 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the Northwest Conference and will look to surpass expectations after being tied for fifth in the conference in preseason coaches' polls.
