Hopkins' Last-Second Shot Helps Bruins Upset Wildcats

GFU Advances to NWC Title Game After Linfield Buzzer-Beater Waved Off

McMINNVILLE, Ore. -- In an all-time classic game between the No. 1-seeded Linfield Wildcats and the No. 4-seeded George Fox women's basketball team in the Northwest Conference semifinal, the Bruins eked out a thrilling 59-57 thanks to a game-winning layup from Hanne Hopkins with 2.9 seconds left.

How It Happened
The Bruins started strong, with Tara Ushiro hitting a layup off a pass from Sophia Hardy in the opening seconds. From there, though, Fox struggled to score; the Bruins did not hit a field goal for the next six minutes as Linfield, who earned their first national ranking in program history with a No. 25 spot in the WBCA Coaches Poll earlier in the week, took a 12-3 lead. Kylie Ritter broke the scoreless spell for the Bruins with a hook shot inside, and Ritter, Hanne Hopkins, and Ushiro helped the Bruins creep their way back in the game. Ritter canned a triple in the waning seconds to help the Fox women rally from down nine to just one at the end of one, 16-15.

Linfield opened the second quarter on a quick 4-0 run before the Bruins bounced back. Only five players would score on the night for Fox, and the Bruins would generate just five points off the bench — all five of those points came in the second. Maddie Schumacher hit a free throw before Emma Boehm had back-to-back turnarounds to help the Bruins take a brief one-point lead. That lead would be short-lived, however, as Linfield ended the half on a 5-2 run to take a 32-30 lead to the break.

The second half began similarly to the first, with the Bruins fighting hard early but suffering a cold spell midway through the period. Ritter, Ushiro, and Hopkins were the only Bruins to score in the second half, and the three combined for seven quick points — with Hopkins swishing a rare triple to tie the game at 37.

From there, though, the Bruins fell cold, scoring just two points over the ensuing five minutes, and the Wildcats took a 48-39 lead. Much like the first, though, GFU fought back; Ritter hit a free throw before Hopkins converted an and-one to get the Bruins within five at the break, 48-45.

A packed crowd at Ted Wilson Gymnasium in McMinnville was treated to a special fourth quarter, with neither team giving an inch. Hopkins scored four straight for the Bruins as Fox hung around, before Ushiro and Ritter nailed tough shots inside to give the Bruins their first lead since a 28-27 advantage in the waning stages of the second, 55-54, with 2:27 remaining.

Hopkins, who had had a career night up to that point, eclipsed her career high with a free-throw line jumper to score her 24th point of the night and put Fox up three, 57-54. And though the Wildcats would hit just one shot in the final four minutes of the game, they picked a heck of a time to do it. NWC Player of the Year Allie Mead, a 20-percent shooter from deep heading into the game, drilled her third triple of the night with nine seconds remaining to knot the game at 57.

Enter Hanne Hopkins. The junior received the ball from Ritter out of the timeout, driving to the right side of the paint and finishing the tough layup with 2.9 seconds remaining, sending the sizable Bruin student section that had made the 14-mile trip from Newberg into a frenzy. Fox forced a missed shot on the next possession, but a jump ball with 0.3 seconds left gave Linfield one last shot.

Those final 0.3 seconds would take nearly seven minutes in real time thanks to more late-minute drama. Senior Miki Vermeulen knocked down a midrange jumper at the horn, but the officials reviewed the play to see if she had put up the shot in time. After a lengthy review, the bucket was waved off when it was determined the game clock had started late. With the call, the Bruin student section spilled onto the court as the team celebrated its win over the top team in the NWC and No. 25 team in the country, 59-57.

Top Performances
Hanne Hopkins, Kylie Ritter, and Tara Ushiro combined for 54 of the 59 points scored by George Fox on the day. Hopkins finished with a career-high 26 points and her first double-double of the season, thanks to an additional 10 boards; the junior also led the team with three steals. Ushiro and Ritter, meanwhile, each scored 14 points, with Ushiro shooting 7-12 from the field (7-9 from two-point range) and Ritter pulling in seven rebounds.

Coach's Thoughts
"The team fought hard tonight," Bruin head coach Lauren Howard said, "We knew we had to meet or exceed their energy from the start. It was a game of runs and I'm so proud of how the girls competed all night."

What It Means
George Fox improves to 15-11 (10-6 NWC), spoiling the best statistical Linfield women's basketball season in program history; the Wildcats finished their year with a  22-4 (15-1 NWC) record. Despite their national ranking, Linfield is given just a three percent chance to earn an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament.

What Happens Next
For the second straight year, it will be the George Fox Bruins and the Whitman Blues in the Northwest Conference Championship. Whitman (19-7, 13-13 NWC) was the number two seed in the tournament, downing third-seeded Puget Sound, 69-56, in the other semifinal game. Unlike the 2025 NWC Championship, which was played on Whitman's home floor in Walla Walla, Wash., the 2026 title game will be played in McMinnville. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm as the Bruins look to qualify for their 15th NCAA Tournament and first in head coach Lauren Howard's three-year tenure.
