NEWBERG, Ore. -- Fox finished their weekend with another competitive battle against Whitworth, eventually falling 5-2 on the day.
How It Happened
The Pirates were ranked third in the preseason polls for the NWC coming into today's match, making the Bruins earn their victories.
The sister duo of
Sophie Denham &
Shanah Denham looked to use their sibling connection in their No. 1 doubles match. The pair managed to win one game despite losing their matchup 6-1. Their match was followed by Court No. 3, featuring
Nicole Schnurbusch and
Audrey Gardner. The team gave it their best against Olivia Corbett and Audrey Judson of the Pirates but ultimately lost their competition with a score of 6-0.
Court No. 2 was as exciting as ever for
Juhree Kizziar and the familiar face of
Kylie Hull. Hull came back out of retirement to help the Bruins win their lone doubles match after going 6-6 facing off against their rivals and extending the tiebreak all the way into double digits, winning the set with a tiebreak score of 13-11 in brilliant fashion.
S. Denham opened up the singles matches by imposing a dominant performance over the Blues' No. 3 competitor, taking her in two sets: 6-2, 6-1. Kizziar tried to continue the momentum on Court No. 4 and stood her ground as best she could. The junior ended up falling to her opponent 6-2, 6-2, giving Whitworth the edge at that moment with the Pirates winning 2-1. Gardner lost 6-1, 6-0 against a solid Josie Kellogg before Whitworth took the day officially on Court No. 2, where Hull took home three singles games, but the 3-3 tie ultimately slipped into a 6-3 loss in set one followed by a 6-0 loss in set two.
Schnurbusch picked up the second singles win for Fox by coming from behind in set one, being down 3-0 before winning 6-3 and then winning set two handily, 6-2.
The final match of the day saw Sh. Denham drop her first set 6-3 before turning the tables and winning set two 6-3. To conclude, however, the match was decided by a point score of 10-8, making the final score of the day 5-2 in Whitworth's favor.
With today's loss, the Bruins fall to 2-3 in conference and 2-4 overall on the season, looking to regroup in next weekend's away match.
