NEWBERG, Ore. -- Fox opened their weekend with another competitive battle against Linfield, eventually sweeping the Wildcats 7-0 for the day. With today's win, the Bruins rise to 3-4 overall and 3-3 in the Northwest Conference.
How it Happened
Linfield came into today's match having lost all nine of their matches this year, but the Bruins made sure not to leave any room for doubt by sweeping the Wildcats in triumphant fashion.
Audrey Gardner &
Nicole Schnurbusch began the day by pulling ahead after being tied 1-1 early, exploding for a five-game run to take down their opponents on Court No. 3, 6-1. The doubles point moved further in the Bruins' favor after the dynamic sister duo of
Sophie Denham and
Shanah Denham allowed only two games in their 6-2 win over the Wildcats' No. 2 doubles pair.
To finalize the doubles sweep,
Riley Bobkiewicz &
Juhree Kizziar closed a drawn-out battle against Linfield's No. 1 doubles team. The Bruins came back after trailing 4-3 and secured the third victory of the day in a 7-5 result.
Singles followed a similar story for Fox with Bobkiewicz holding down the No. 1 court. The third-year athlete defeated her opponent 6-2 in the first set after trailing 2-1 early. In set two, she pulled ahead and never looked back, winning 6-2 again and bringing home point number two for the Bruins.
Sh. Denham posted identical scores, winning 6-2, 6-2 on Court No. 2, and paved the way for So. Denham to bring home the deciding point for Fox. So. Denham blazed through set one with a 6-0 victory but faced a strong response from Emily Redwood, who secured a tight 6-4 win in set two. However, the GFU senior responded with a 6-1 set-three victory on Court No. 3 to seal the match for the Bruins.
Kizziar added to the action by sweeping her opponent on Court No. 4, 6-0, 6-0, followed by
Audrey Gardner taking down the Wildcats' No. 5 singles player in three sets. The freshman showed impressive poise, bouncing back after dropping the first set 6-4 to take set two 6-2 before finishing the match with a 10-2 third-set tiebreak victory over Gianna Moloney.
Schnurbusch eliminated her adversary on Court No. 6 by winning set one 6-1 and coming back from a 4-3 deficit to win set two 6-4, giving the Bruins a full sweep of all matches.
