Fox Downs River Otters 5-2 in Second Meeting This Season

NEWBERG, Ore. -- Fox finished thier lone match of the weekend with a commanding 5-2 victory over Lewis & Clark. With today's win, the Bruins rise to 4-5 overall and 4-4 in the Northwest Conference.

How It Happened
Coming into today's match, the Bruins were ready to take home the victory over the River Otters. Their previous match in February ended in a narrow 4-3 loss at Portland. In today's competition, Fox made sure to rewrite the script.

Riley Bobkiewicz and Shanah Denham opened the day as the No. 1 doubles duo, taking on Susanna Anand and Charlotte Makoni. The Bruins tallied six game victories to take the first match 6-1 against the Otters.

Audrey Gardner and Nicole Schnurbusch sought to claim the doubles point for Fox on Court No. 3 and propel the Bruins into singles with some enthusiasm. After going down 2-0, the momentum followed Lewis & Clark and presented a fight for the Bruins. The dynamic duo won the next two games to make it 2-2 before winning one more game, but the River Otters snagged the victory 6-3.

The final doubles match on Court No. 2 featured a narrow battle for Juhree Kizziar and Sophie Denham. The tennis ball danced from baseline to baseline in back-and-forth points for both squads. With the game tied 4-4 and the Bruins determined to finish off their opponent, Fox brought home the victory 6-4, giving the Bruins the first point of the day.

Singles began with Kizziar pumped off her doubles win and ready to make her mark. Blazing through the first six games, Kizziar took down her opponent 6-0 in set one. In set two, she won the first three games, nearing a sweep, but her opponent wouldn't go down without a fight. Maya Curry swarmed the court with three game wins to Kizziar's one, making it 4-3 with Curry trailing. The Bruin sophomore then willed the following games to victory, taking down her adversary 6-3 and keeping the points rolling for Fox.

Sh. Denham held down the court for the No. 2 matchup, taking a commanding 6-0, 6-0 win and leaving room for the next Bruin to take home the final point needed to win the day for the team.

Schnurbusch gave it her all on Court No. 6, winning three games between two sets in her 6-1, 6-2 loss against Madison Vianzon.

On Court No. 1, Bobkiewicz found herself down 3-0 in set one but would go on to put four game wins on the board. Despite her near comeback, her opponent tallied two game wins during the Bruin's push and eventually went on to win set one 6-4 and set two 6-2, giving the River Otters their second point of the day and some life to the conference opponent.

The match that sealed the day for Fox found itself on Court No. 5 with Gardner. The freshman finished her opponent in set one 6-2 and found herself in a neck-and-neck fight in set two. All signs were pointing to a third set when Gardner went down to Alexandra Mignogna, 5-2. In remarkable fashion, Gardner went on to win the next five games to stun her opponent and officially win the day, with the score at 4-2 in Fox's favor.

So. Denham put the icing on the cake for the Bruins on Court No. 3. So. Denham began the match by going up 4-0 before her foe clawed back to make it 5-5 in set one. The senior proved her closing ability by finishing off the first set 7-5 and taking set two 6-0, bringing the day to a positive ending.

Again, resilience proved to be one of the biggest assets for the Bruins, who continue to build from match to match and proved to be the shining characteristic of the day.

Coach's Thoughts
"I couldn't be more proud of how the girls competed during this match," said Bruin head coach Rick Cruz. "The doubles set the tone for us, and we kept that momentum during the singles. Our goal is to always be better in the second half of the season, and this was a great start!"

What Happens Next
The Bruins will go on the road to take on Southwestern in their Spring Break tournament on Thursday, March 19, in Orlando, Fla. The match is set to begin at 8:00 a.m. Pacific Time.
