ORLANDO, Fla. — The Bruins men's tennis team opened their spring break tournament with a win against Colby-Sawyer College, 7-0, and a loss to Coe College, 6-1. With today's matches, the Bruins move to 5-6 overall and 4-4 in the Northwest Conference on the season.
How It Happened – Colby-Sawyer College
George Fox was on the verge of its first victory Tuesday against Colby-Sawyer before lightning postponed the match while the Bruins were leading. They carried that momentum into today's rescheduled matchup, resulting in a 7-0 sweep of the Chargers, one of the top teams in the Conference of New England.
Zach Moore and
Aiden Cruz took control on Court No. 1, winning 6-1 to open the day. The next two matches were decided by grit and determination.
Luis Hernandez and
Keita Shoji were pushed to the edge on Court No. 2, battling to a 7-5 win that helped secure the doubles point. On Court No. 3,
Joseph Vece and
Bernardo Martinez matched that effort with another tight 7-5 victory.
Singles play featured larger margins overall, though a few matches still tested the Bruins' resilience.
Moore opened with a 7-5 win in set one before dominating set two, 6-1, on Court No. 1. Shoji controlled his match on Court No. 2, defeating Zsombor Homonnay 6-1, 6-0.
On Court No. 3, Hernandez dropped the first set 6-4 before responding with a 6-4 win in set two, forcing a match tiebreak that ended 10-4.
Freshman Cruz won his fourth straight singles match, taking both sets 6-1. Vece earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Jacob Riis, while Martinez closed things out on Court No. 6 with a 6-0, 6-2 win, completing the sweep.
How It Happened – Coe College
After a dominant showing earlier in the day, the Bruins faced a strong Coe College squad from the American Rivers Conference.
Moore and Cruz led the way in doubles, earning the lone win for George Fox with a 6-2 victory on Court No. 1. Shoji and Hernandez fell just short on Court No. 2, losing 7-6 in a 7-5 tiebreak.
On Court No. 3, Vece and Martinez nearly mounted a comeback, cutting the deficit from 4-2 to 5-4 before falling 6-4, giving the Kohawks the doubles point.
In singles, Moore split sets on Court No. 1, dropping the first 6-2 before winning 6-1 in set two, then securing a 10-5 tiebreak victory for the Bruins' lone point.
The next three courts were also decided by match tiebreaks, highlighting how close the contest was despite the final score.
Shoji edged Joshua Tiemann in a 7-6 (7-5) first set before falling 6-2 in set two and 10-4 in the tiebreak. Hernandez rebounded from a 6-1 first-set loss to win 7-5 in set two but dropped the tiebreak 10-5.
Cruz had the closest finish of the day, bouncing back from a first-set loss to win 6-3 in set two before narrowly falling 11-9 in the tiebreak.
Vece was defeated 6-1, 6-2 on Court No. 5, while Martinez fell 6-3, 6-1 on Court No. 6 as the Kohawks secured the team win.
