ORLANDO, Fla. -- In their second day of the Florida Spring Break trip, the George Fox women's tennis team dropped a matchup to the No. 30 team in the country, the Denison Big Red, 6-1.
How It Happened
The Big Red swept the doubles session to get off to a solid start. Court one (
Riley Bobkiewicz/
Shanah Denham) and court three (
Nicole Schnurbusch/
Audrey Gardner) each lost to Denison, 6-2, while the duo of
Juhree Kizziar and
Sophie Denham nearly knocked off the Big Red's number two doubles team in a 7-5 loss. The Bruins got off to a 2-1 lead early, and led, 5-4, but three straight lost games ultimately resulted in the set loss.
When it came to singles play, the Bruins stayed competitive. On court four,
Juhree Kizziar had the lone win of the day for GFU; Kizziar rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win the first set, 6-3, and dominated from the start in the second set, winning 6-2, to down Sophia Gallagher and pick up the win.
Meanwhile, Bobkiewicz pushed Peyton Oda on court one. The senior rallied from a 6-0 first-set loss, winning the second set, 6-3. In the final tiebreaker point, Oda captured the first three points and went on to take the match with a 10-3 win.Â
Sophie Denham had the closest loss of the day for the Bruins, dropping her match (0-6, 7-6, 1-0). After losing all six games in the first set, the senior bounced back, trading games back and forth to force a third set. In the tiebreaker set, Denham lost the free three points, and a late comeback attempt fell short in a 10-4 loss.
The number two, five, and six singles courts saw similar stories:
Shanah Denham, Gardner, and Schnurbusch each lost the first set, 6-0, en route to falling in the match; Denham lost the second set, 6-2, on court two, Gardner 6-3 on court five, and Schnurbusch 6-1 on court six.
What It Means
The Bruins fall to 4-7 on the young year, while the No. 30 Big Red improve to 12-2 on the season.
