SEWANEE, Tenn. -- The George Fox women's lacrosse team traveled far from home to Tennessee to play against the Rhodes Lynxes—hanging close early on but ultimately losing the game, 17-7.
How It Happened
Rhodes scored the first goal in the starting three minutes, starting off the game in control. Draw control was immediately won by the Lynxes and some back-and-forth action took place—
Sasha Thayer attempted a shot, but it was saved.
Then,
Lana Davis picked up the ground ball, it got around to
Alli Stilp who then launched it at the net, but it was too far high. Stilp gave the ball to Thayer, who sent it right into the goal, tying the score with Rhodes 1-1. However, halfway through the seven-minute mark, Rhodes managed to score another goal, taking the lead again.
In the final two minutes of the first period, Rhodes was up by two after they claimed another goal to go up, 3-1. But Fox didn't stay quiet for long, as
Ava Bluhm won draw control, charged down the field, passed it to Davis who flung the ball into the goal, only one goal behind at 3-2 with one minute left.
Starting the second quarter off strongly, the Bruins scored instantly as Stilp attacked the net, sending the ball right into it and tying the score once again 3-3. But the Lynxes reacted quickly, also scoring a goal a minute later.
Rhodes started a five-goal run, continuing with another goal at just under ten minutes, and three more within the final five minutes. This launched them ahead to 8-3, leaving the Bruins stuck in the dust, and things weren't looking up for Fox in the third quarter as the Lynxes extended their run to 10-0, It had come to a total of 13-3 with just under ten minutes left in the period.
The Bruins felt defeated, but still had fight in them as Davis stood on the field, getting ready for a free-position shot with just over six minutes remaining. Davis didn't waste any time as she shot at the net, making the goal, and putting the Bruins at four goal overall (13-4). Rhodes still had a little fire left in them in the last five minutes, as they pulled out another goal, topping off the period with a score of 14-4.
For the final quarter, the Bruins came back with a spark, as Davis and Bluhm both attempted to score, but they were saved by the goalkeeper. Thayer made a groundball pickup, sent the ball to Bluhm who then made a shot, marking the score up to 14-5. They were starting to gain traction when
Naomi Rauch scored a goal a few minutes later with the help of a clean assist by
Merrick Gibson.
Gibson scored a solid free-position goal—the Bruins called a timeout to gather themselves for an attempted comeback. Draw control was then won by Davis, but the ball was stolen by Rhodes who then scored around the four-minute mark. The Lynxes scored two more goals after that, making the final score 17-7.
