NEWBERG, Ore. -- Fox opened their weekend at home with a handy win against the Willamette Bearcats at home with a score of 6-1.
How It Happened
Six days separated the Bruins from their last match played in Orlando, Fla., which ended in a 7-0 win against Huntingdon. Rest filled the respite in between their last match in Orlando and their first match back on the West Coast, giving Fox the proper recovery needed to win today's match.
Doubles went in the Bruins' favor with limited resistance besides the first set, while singles pushed multiple opponent duels to either three sets or a tiebreak, ultimately only conceding one match total to the visiting Bearcats.
Sophie Denham and
Juhree Kizziar opened up doubles, taking down their adversaries 6-2 on Court No. 2. The score was close after the Bruin duo only led 3-2 in the middle of the frame before going on a three-game run to win the match. On Court No. 1,
Riley Bobkiewicz and
Shanah Denham took control early and were only tied once during their match at 2-2. Eventually, the Bearcat duo would not give up without a fight and pushed the match to being down by one game at 5-4 before the Bruins sealed the 6-4 victory in style.
On Court No. 3,
Nicole Schnurbusch and partner
Audrey Gardner followed the pair of wins with one of their own to sweep the doubles point in a 6-2 final heading into singles.
Between the No. 2 singles players for the day, Sh. Denham dominated by coming away from set one 6-0 and set two 6-1, barely giving an inch to her competitor. Kizziar continued the dominant pace set by Denham by downing her opponent in two sets (6-1, 6-0), going for ten straight unanswered games on Court No. 4.
Schnurbusch demonstrated her resilience versus the No. 6 singles player for the Bearcats by coming back from being down 3-2 in set one to winning 6-3 before taking set two 6-2, even after losing the first point of the second set, which sealed the Bruins' fate for the day.
For Fox's fourth straight singles win, Bobkiewicz went the distance to finish off Alexa De Crinis on Court No. 1. A tough set one loss of 6-4 made the match lean in Willamette's favor before Bobkiewicz landed a remarkable comeback, going 6-4, 6-4 to finish off the match for her third straight singles win over her last three opponents.
Gardner saw the only loss of the day for the Bruins, losing set one 6-1 before nearly drawing a third set as set two sat at 6-6 before the tiebreak fell in her opposition's favor 7-1.
The final match of the day stretched to three sets as So. Denham managed to win set two 6-3 after losing set one 6-3 before serves were exchanged twelve times in a dazzling 7-5 victory for the senior, making the Bruins' 6-1 victory complete.
What it Means
With today's win, the Bruins rise to 7-7 overall and 4-4 in the Northwest Conference, while the Bearcats drop to 2-11 and 1-9 in conference.
