TACOMA, Wash. — The Bruins men's tennis team closed their weekend with a stunning 4-3 win against the Puget Sound Loggers.
How it Happened
The Bruins' men's tennis team was pushed to their fullest extent in a challenging contest against Puget Sound, with the last match ending in a come-from-behind finish from one of the Fox's top athletes.
In doubles,
Zach Moore and
Aiden Cruz were upset on Court No. 1, taking two games in a 6-2 loss that didn't define the next two matches.
Luis Hernandez and
Keita Shoji bounced back for the Bruins versus the No. 2 competitors against the Loggers. The dynamic duo took control of the match and won 6-3, leading into the closest competition in doubles.
Jayden Lovingfoss and
Joseph Vece sat tied 5-5 before they demonstrated full force on the court and won the match 7-5, bringing Lovingfoss his first collegiate victory of his career and sealing the first point of the day for the Bruins.
In singles, Shoji handled his opponent in two sets to defeat the No. 3 competitor, 6-3, 6-1. Hernandez saw his match drawn out to three sets. After losing set one 6-3, the senior crafted a 6-2 comeback before losing set three 6-3.
Cruz secured one of the three points for Fox in singles, taking down Vincent Unpingco on Court No. 4, only allowing five points across both sets, winning 6-3, 6-2.
The battle of the No. 5 competitors featured Vece, who took set one 6-4 and posted four game wins in set two but ultimately lost 6-4 and dropped set three 6-3.
Lovingfoss led early on Court No. 6, winning 6-3 in set one. The righty put forth his best effort in the following two sets, losing 6-0 in set two and 6-1 in set three.
Moore had the final say on Court No. 1, with pressure leaning against him as he contested the number nine-ranked player in the West region. He saw set one (7-6) slip away, leaving him against the wall in set two, which he won 6-3, forcing a third set. Once the match hit 6-6, a tiebreak pushed Moore to give everything he had, which proved enough as he came away with a 7-4 tiebreak victory.
What it Means
With today's match result, the Bruins now move to 7-7 overall and 6-4 in the Northwest Conference for the season. Puget Sound falls to 0-14, 0-11 in conference.
