Season Preview: Women's Golf Looks to Build Off Successful Fall

3/6/2026 10:39:00 AM

NEWBERG, Ore. -- The George Fox women's golf team heads into the 2026 spring season with confidence, momentum, and excitement.

The Bruins enter the spring after a fall season that included three team victories, highlighted by a win at the NWC Fall Classic. That success has set the tone for a group eager to continue building.

"This young team continues to learn and grow with each practice, and I see unlimited potential," said head coach MaryJo McCloskey.

The team is led by a strong sophomore duo that's eager to take on the spring. Katelyn Lam, a First Team All-Conference selection in 2024-25, captured her first collegiate victory this fall as the medalist at the Fall Classic. Alongside her is Samara D'Silva, who McCloskey says played extensively well last season and finished second individually at the Confluence Classic in Walla Walla.

Depth and experience will be key this season, particularly among the junior class.

"As good as our two sophomores are, watch out for our three juniors," McCloskey said.

All-Conference player Reyna Naranjo competed through injury during the fall, making the winter break a timely reset. Transfer Abby Matelski continues to improve and is poised for a breakout season.

"Having [Reyna] back at 100% will be huge for us this spring," McCloskey said. "And for Abby, as her confidence grows, she just gets better and better—we're really lucky to have her."

Junior Sofia Itziar Ayesa had a strong fall when called upon to compete in the lineup, but as a medical engineering major, the demands of her junior year will limit her availability this spring.

Rounding out the roster is freshman Ashlyn Johnson, who showed tremendous promise in the fall, including a tie for second at the Division II St. Martin's Invitational. With a fall collegiate season now under her belt, McCloskey believes she's ready to take the next step. "She's a superstar in the making, and I think she's set up for an amazing spring."
Beyond talent, the team's chemistry continues to stand out.

"This is a group that truly supports and pushes one another," McCloskey said. "They believe in hard work, they believe in each other, and they believe in what's possible. We are excited to keep improving and taking it to another level—and that is the goal."

The Bruins open the spring by hosting a national event in Phoenix, followed by the Willamette Cup in Salem, the Santa Cruz Invitational in Monterey, the NWC Spring Classic in Tacoma, and the NWC Championship hosted by Pacific at Pumpkin Ridge in North Plains.

And after that, the teams hopes to ride that confidence, momentum, and excitement to another NCAA Championship appearance.
