Newberg, Ore. — The Bruins men's tennis team began their weekend with a 4–3 loss against the Linfield Wildcats at home, moving to 3–4 overall and 3–3 in the Northwest Conference.
How It Happened
Singles matchups almost carried the Bruins past the Wildcats in today's battle of conference opponents. Despite the sweep of the doubles point by Linfield, Fox pushed through to make today's contest a close one.
Zach Moore and
Ikuho Ebisu opened doubles play by securing four games against Linfield's No. 1 doubles team. The duo dropped the match 6–4, which marked the largest margin of victory in the doubles matches.
Keita Shoji and
Aiden Cruz stood tall on Court 2, going the distance against their opponents in a 7–6 loss.
Luis Hernandez and
Bernardo Martinez showed similar fight in their 7–6 loss to Linfield's No. 3 doubles team, giving the Wildcats a clean doubles sweep over the Bruins and securing the first point of the day.
For singles, Moore eliminated his opponent in tight fashion after gaining momentum from a 7–6 victory in set one following a 7–5 tiebreak and a dominant 6–2 win in set two. Shoji fell in his sets against Brooks Lerfald on Court No. 2, 6–2, 6–3. On Court No. 3, Hernandez was handed a loss in a back-and-forth matchup that went the distance in a three-set contest. Hernandez lost his first set 6–3 before winning set two 6–3. In the final set, he wasn't able to hold on and lost 6–1.
Ebisu gave the Bruins one of their three points of the day on Court No. 4. The senior narrowly lost his first set 7–5 before mounting an impressive comeback and defeating his competitor 6–3 in set two and 6–0 in set three.
Cruz posed a tough battle for Alexander Rosenquist on Court No. 5 by edging out set one 6–4 before claiming set two 6–0.
On Court No. 6, Martinez mustered up two game wins versus his adversary but was thwarted 6–2 in set one. Martinez inevitably lost 6–0 in set two, giving Linfield a 4–3 win against the Bruins for the day.
Despite dropping today's match, the Bruins are hoping to take down their final opponent of the weekend and add another victory to the record column in Forest Grove.
