TACOMA, Wash. - After a close win in the first game, the
23rd-ranked University of Puget Sound Loggers turned up the heat in
the next two games to complete a 3-0 sweep (30-26, 30-18, 30-17)
over the George Fox University Bruins in a Northwest Conference
women's volleyball match Friday night here at Memorial Fieldhouse.
Game one featured six lead changes and 14 ties, the last at
25-25. UPS had a kill from Kalli Kamphaus and a service ace by
Stephanie Harvey to break the deadlock, and the Loggers closed out
the game with back-to-back kills by Monica Groves.
Puget Sound jumped out to a commanding 18-7 lead in game two
behind six kills each by Groves and Kamphaus. The Bruins responded
with six kills from Elizabeth Anderson to close within four points
at 21-17, but a 9-1 run by the Loggers to end the game
shot-circuited the Bruins' comeback attempts.
The Bruins were within three, down 13-10, in game three when the
Loggers took off, out-scoring the visitors 17-7 the rest of the
way. UPS hit .368 in the game, with 16 kills and only two errors,
to .077 for the Bruins.
Anderson had 10 kills to lead the Bruins, who suffered through
their lowest hitting match of the season at .040 with 35 kills but
29 errors. Amy Batchelder passed out 27 assists. Jenna Dohren led
the defense with 17 digs, Jennifer Panico had 12, and Batchelder
had 11. Anderson had five blocks.
The Loggers, who hit .223 with 50 kills and only 17 errors, were
led by Groves and Lindsey Denman with 13 kills apiece. Jamee Fred
contributed 37 assists. Rachel Gross was everywhere on defense with
31 digs, Fred added 12, and Harvey had 10. Groves was in on three
of the Loggers' five blocks.
George Fox (8-6, NWC 3-4) returns home to host Yamhill County
rival Linfield College while Puget Sound (10-6, NWC 5-2) hosts
Willamette University Saturday, both matches at 7:00 p.m.
