McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Unlike their previous meeting this season
when every game was decided by two points, Saturday night's
Northwest Conference women's volleyball finale was decided
decisively as the Linfield College Wildcats swept the George Fox
University Bruins 3-0 (30-13, 30-16, 30-24) Saturday night here at
Ted Wilson Gym.
In the opening game of the night, the Wildcats steamrolled their
way to the win behind seven kills from Katelyn Baker. Linfield hit
.324 to a minus -.049 for the Bruins. Leading 9-6, Linfield pieced
together a 21-7 run the rest of the way.
Linfield launched another consistent attack in game two, hitting
.395 to .133 for George Fox. After the game was tied 2-2, the
Wildcats went on a 16-2 surge that gave them an 18-4 advantage, and
the Bruins could not mount any sort of comeback.
The Bruins made some noise in game three, going on an 8-0 run to
cut a 26-15 deficit to three at 26-23. The Wildcats answered that
threat by scoring four of the final five points of the game to
close out the set and the season.
Elizabeth Anderson led the Bruins with eight kills and Amy
Batchelder had 24 assists. George Fox managed only a .034 hitting
percentage, the Bruins' lowest mark of the season. Jenna Dohren
picked up 12 digs to lead the Bruin defense, and Anderson had three
blocks.
Linfield was led by 13 kills from Kelsey French, with Lisa
Brocard adding 11 and Baker 10. Linfield finished with a .299
hitting percentage. Stephanie Purser passed out 34 assists. Rachael
Rahn led all defenders with 26 digs, and French had 19. Emily
Vuylsteke and Kelsey Habura had three blocks apiece.
Four Bruin seniors, who were honored Friday in their final home
match of the season, completed their George Fox careers Saturday:
middle blocker Anderson, who ranks second all-time in Bruin blocks
with 423 and eighth in kills with 964; setter Batchelder, who is
third in career assists with 3,303 and ninth in aces with 111;
outside hitter Whitney Kolb, who ends with 750 kills; and middle
blocker Cassandra Woods, who finishes with 261 kills and 112
blocks.
George Fox ends up at 10-13 overall and 5-11 in conference
action, tied for seventh in the standings with Lewis & Clark
College. Linfield finishes the season with a 15-10 overall record
and a 10-6 mark in NWC play, standing third.
