PORTLAND, Ore. - Ending George Fox University's
four-game winning streak and knocking the Bruins out of a share of
first place in the Northwest Conference, the Lewis & Clark
College Pioneers swept the visiting Bruins 3-0 (25-11, 25-21,
25-20) in a women's volleyball match Saturday night here at
the Pamplin Sports Center.
The Pioneers broke open the first set by scoring six straight
points, including a kill and a block by Katherine Fiedler, to go up
12-5. After extending the lead to 16-9, the Pioneers went on
another six-point scoring run to extend the lead to 22-9.
A kill by Margaret Dowling closed out the set.
In the second set, the Bruins committed four straight errors to
put the Pioneers up 6-2, and the home team extended its lead to
17-10 on a kill in the middle from Fiedler. The Bruins finally came
alive at that point, with kills by Natalie Pickett and Jennifer
Panico helping the Bruins rally. A service ace
by Pickett cut the Pioneer lead to just three at 23-20, but a kill
by Fiedler gave the Pioneers a set-point opportunity.
A kill by the Bruins' Lyndsay Hovee staved
off the first set point, but Dowling put away the final point.
After battling to a 7-7 standoff early in the third set, the
Pioneers pulled ahead 12-7 as Dowling landed three kills in the
five-point rally. George Fox answered with a run
of their own, Picket serving two more aces, including one that
brought the Bruins within one at 14-13. Once
again, however, three Bruin attack errors helped push the Pioneers
out to a 19-14 advantage. The Bruins pulled
within two at 20-18 on a Pioneer attack error, but they could get
no closer. Dowling ended the match with her 13th kill of the night.
Hovee had eight kills to lead the Bruins, who struggled to a .000
hitting percentage with 26 kills but an equal number of
errors. Lani Rasmussen had 11 assists and Ali
Lefebvre 10. Hovee made 11 digs, and Pickett and
Jessica Morrison were in on three blocks apiece.
Dowling had a match-high 13 kills, hitting .400, and 11 digs for
the Pioneers, and Lou Ohki also had 11
digs. Fiedler also had an efficient match,
landing nine kills for a .467 attack percentage.
Melody Kayser had 15 assists and Andrea Chase
13. Fiedler had three solo blocks.
George Fox slipped to 10-6 overall and into a three-way tie for
second in the conference, behind 5-1 University of Puget Sound, at
4-2. Lewis & Clark joined the Bruins and
Pacific University, a 3-0 loser at Linfield College, in second
place at 4-2 while improving to 9-8 overall.
Both teams return to action Friday at 7:00 p.m., George Fox
visiting Puget Sound while Lewis & Clark goes to Pacific.
