NEWBERG, Ore. -
Hitting only .032 for the match, their lowest percentage of the
season, the George Fox University Bruins dropped a 3-0 decision
(27-25, 25-17, 25-19) to the visiting Pacific University Boxers as
Northwest Conference women's volleyball play commenced
Wednesday night here at the Wheeler Sports Center's Miller
Gym.
The Bruins had 27 kills but made 23 errors in 125 attempts in the
three games, with Pacific's 10 blocks taking a toll on the
home team's numbers. The Boxers managed a
.147 attack percentage, making 43 kills and 22 errors in 143 tries.
Set one was tight throughout, featuring seven lead changes and 16
ties. Caitlin Gollehon sparked a 5-0 run that
lifted the Boxers from a 15-14 deficit to a 19-15 lead, the largest
by either team to that point. Still ahead at
23-19, the Boxers surrendered four straight points to the Bruins,
Lyndsay Hovee recording back-to-back kills to rally the
Bruins. The Boxers had set point three times
thereafter, finally securing the game the last time on a service
ace by Gollehon, who had 10 kills in the contest.
The first half of set two was close until midway through when
Pacific took control. A kill by the
Bruins' Natalie Pickett forged an 11-11 tie, but the Boxers
scored the next four points, including two more kills by Gollehon,
to move in front for good. A Brittany Johnson
service ace closed out the set and gave the Boxers their largest
lead of eight points.
The final set saw seven ties early on, the last at 11-11 when the
Bruins' Ali Lefebvre served an ace. A kill
by Kelsy Takashima broke the deadlock, and the Boxers gradually
pulled away. A kill by Melissa Dunn closed out
the match, the final six-point margin equaling Pacific's
largest lead of the set.
Jennifer Panico led the Bruins with eight kills, while Lefebvre
had 11 assists. The Bruins played decent defense
with 67 digs, led by Hovee with 14, Sarah Burkey added 13, and
Lefebvre and Ashley Sheller had 10 apiece.
Pickett was in on three of the Bruins' five blocks.
Gollehon finished with a match-high 15 kills, and Takashima added
10 while hitting .455 with no errors in 22
attempts. Johnson had 13 assists and Brooke Toy
11. Gollehon and Dunn had 16 digs each, and
Takashima had eight block assists.
George Fox (6-5, NWC 0-1) visits Pacific Lutheran University
Saturday at 7:00 p.m., while Pacific (2-7, NWC 1-0) goes to the
University of Puget Sound Friday at 7:00 p.m.
