NEWBERG, Ore. – Capitalizing on a penalty
kick opportunity midway through the second half, George Fox
University's Jenny McKinsey cashed in on the Oregon Institute
of Technology's foul to give the Bruins a hard-fought 1-0 win
over the visiting Owls in a non-conference women's soccer
match Monday afternoon here at Morse Field.
The Bruins maintained control of the game for the most part,
out-shooting the Owls 24-9 overall and 11-4 in shots on goal, but
were turned away repeatedly by Tech keeper Jaclyn Unruh, who had 10
saves. Bruin goalie Sally Page collected four
saves in posting her second shutout in as many games this season.
The lone break in the defensive struggle finally came in the
game's 64th minute. George Fox midfielder
Nicole Akiu dribbled into the box from the right wing and was
winding up for a shot when she was tripped by a Tech
defender. McKinsey, who also scored the lone
goal of the game in George Fox's season-opening win over
Southern Oregon University on Saturday, took the penalty kick and
lined it to the left of Unruh for the winner at 64:44.
George Fox (2-0) plays again Wednesday, taking on its third
straight NAIA and Cascade Collegiate Conference opponent with a
12:00 noon match at Eastern Oregon University.
Oregon Tech (1-6) is off until Saturday, Sept. 27, when the Owls
will host Northwest Christian College at 5:00 p.m.
