TACOMA, Wash. - Four George Fox University
hitters, set up by Ali Toedtemeier's career-high
41 assists, posted double-figure kills to lead the visiting Bruins
past the 22nd-ranked University of Puget Sound Loggers 3-1 (25-23,
22-25, 25-15, 25-16) for their eighth straight win in Northwest
Conference women's volleyball Saturday night here at Memorial
Fieldhouse.
Eliza Pledger led the Bruins to the upset with 14 kills while
hitting .308, Lyndsay Hovee and Sarah Crossfield had 11 each with
Crossfield hitting .292, and Kaitlyn Maddams had 10 with a .296
hitting percentage. Jennifer Panico just missed double
figures with nine kills while contributing 29 digs and three
service aces. Carley Johnson added 20 digs, Toedtemeier 19,
and Hovee 14. The Bruins had 10 blocks as a team, led by
Maddams with two solo blocks and five block assists. Lani
Rasmussen chipped in with 13 assists and three aces.
As a team, George Fox collected 61 kills to 41 for Puget Sound
and out-hit the Loggers .211 to .122. The Bruins also made 93
digs to 72 for the home team.
Puget Sound got 12 kills apiece from Kalli Kamphaus and Brynn
Blickenstaff, with Stephanie Harvey contributing 33 assists.
Leigh Sumida tied for the match high with 29 digs, Kris Sumida
added 14, and Juliette Witous made 13. The Loggers had 10.5
blocks, led by Kamphaus with two solos and four assists.
In the first set, both teams came out firing, Puget Sound
hitting .343 and George Fox .278. The largest lead of the set
was four points three times by the Bruins, the last at 19-15
following a kill by Maddams, who was 4-for-4 in the set. The
Loggers closed within a point three times with the score in the
20's, but a kill by Hovee secured the win for the Bruins.
In the second frame, both squads cooled off on the attack, but
the Loggers used an impressive 5.5 blocks in the set to collect the
victory and knot the match at 1-1. Kamphaus led the Loggers
with five kills and three blocks to help the Loggers win another
tight contest in which the largest margin was three points, with 11
ties and six lead changes.
The Bruins took control in the third set by putting up a
match-high 17 kills while hitting .295 and holding the Loggers to a
.068 mark. After an early 2-0 deficit, the Bruins reeled off
seven unanswered points with Panico serving to take command and
gradually pulled away to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
In the fourth set, the Loggers built an early 4-1 lead before
the Bruins ripped off an astonishing 14 straight points behind
Johnson's serving. Hovee collected six kills and teamed up
with Maddams for a pair of blocks in the streak. The Loggers
never recovered, getting no closer than seven before the match
ended on a Kristin Knaupp kill.
George Fox (13-3, NWC 6-2) is now tied for second in the
conference with Lewis & Clark College behind first-place
Pacific Lutheran University, and will get a chance to break the tie
Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. against the Pioneers in Portland.
Puget Sound (11-5, NWC 5-3) also visits Lewis & Clark next, on
Friday at 7:00 p.m.
