MBSK: AUGSBURG 91, GEORGE FOX 63 - Auggies' Hot Streak in First Half Upends Bruins

Box Score

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Connecting on seven shots in a row and eight of ten at one stretch, the Augsburg College Auggies broke open a tight game midway through the first half and went on to a 91-63 win over the George Fox University Bruins in a non-conference men's basketball game Monday afternoon here at Si Melby Hall.

The Bruins kept the game close in the early going, never taking the lead but forging four ties.  Stephen Wiseley and Jack Martin each hit three-pointers for 6-6 and 14-14 ties, and Wiseley hit a layup to even it at 16-16 with 11:34 left in the half.

Augsburg then hit seven straight shots and eight of ten to break the game open.  Anthony Humphrey hit a three and a jumper to cap an 8-0 run that made it 24-16 with 7:58 left, and the Auggies stretched the margin to 15 points at 40-25 with 2:19 remaining on a fast break layup by David Olson.  A basket by Dan Lingenfelder and a three by Evan Atwater enabled the Bruins to climb within 42-30 at the half.

After starting the game 5-15 from the field, the Auggies hit 12 of their last 16 shots to finish with a .548 mark (17-31) in the half.  The Bruins struggled to a .393 percentage (11-28).  Olson had nine first-half points for Augsburg to lead all scorers, while Wiseley and Alex Stockner led George Fox with seven each.

The Auggies remained comfortably ahead throughout the second half as they remained hot from the field, hitting seven of their first 11 shots, while the Bruins continued to have trouble finding the net, making only two of their first nine tries.  Matthew Quammen's free throws with 3:02 left gave Augsburg its largest lead of 34 points at 88-54.

Augsburg shot .581 (18-31) in the second half to end with a .565 overall percentage (35-62).  George Fox dipped to .370 (10-27) in the final period and finished with a .382 shooting mark (21-55) for the game.  The rebounds were even at 35 apiece, but the Bruins committed 18 turnovers, doubling the Auggies' nine.

Wiseley led the Bruins with 13 points, hitting 6-6 from the line, handed out four assists, and picked up five steals.  Stockner added 11 points and just missed a double-double with a game-high nine rebounds.

Olson with 18 points, Cory Polta with 12, and Jon Cassens with 11 topped the Auggies, while Brett Sorenson grabbed eight boards and had four steals.  Ben Flavin had a game-high six assists.
