NW CHRISTIAN 3-12, GEORGE FOX 2-4: Beacons Take Close One and Blowout from Bruins

Box Score Game 1

Box Score Game 2

EUGENE, Ore.
  – Freshman Brooke Davis was the star of each game, striking out 14 in an extra-inning win in game one and hitting three home runs in consecutive at-bats in game two, as the Northwest Christian University Beacons swept a softball doubleheader from the George Fox University Bruins, 3-2 in ten innings and 12-4 in six, Wednesday afternoon here at James Park.

The Beacons went in front in game one with a run in the 1st as Megan Mazanec scored on an RBI grounder by Brittany Robles. The Bruins tied the game in the 2nd as Erin Lee doubled in Becka Doyle, who had singled.  Lissa Hatefi gave NCU its second lead in the 4th, hitting an RBI single to score Corrie Gustafson. GFU, however, tied the game once more in the top of the 6th when Chelsea Bradely doubled to drive in Kristen Griffith, who had singled and advanced on a passed ball.

The game remained tied until the last of the 10th.  Hatefi led off the frame with a single, stole second with one out, and Cassie Bishop singled to center to score the winning run.  Bradely (3-7) was the hard-luck loser for the Bruins after matching Davis pitch-for-pitch, striking out 12 and allowing eight hits and one walk in 9.1 innings.

Davis (2-1) scattered 10 hits and walked only one in tying her rookie strikeout record for the Beacons, as well as setting a new NCU record for most innings pitched in a game.

Bradely was 3-5 for the Bruins, including two doubles, while Griffith, Doyle, and Audrey Dove had two hits apiece.  Hatefi, Bishop, and Gustafson had two hits each for the Beacons.

Northwest Christian cranked out a school-record six home run in the second game, pinning the loss on Lee (0-1), who was making her first start of the season for the Bruins.  She was touched for 11 hits and nine runs in 3.1 innings, fanning two and walking three.  Shelby Briske, in her first appearance on the mound, finished up, allowing three runs in 1.2 innings with one strikeout.

The Beacons got on the board with one in the 1st on an RBI single by Bishop, but in the 2nd, the floodgates opened with five runs, all coming on of a trio of homers from Jonni Byrne, Mazanec, and Davis.

Davis and Bishop hit back-to-back bombs in the 4th to give NCU a 9-1 lead. The Bruins mounted a minor comeback attempt over the next two innings, scoring three runs as Bradely hit a solo home run, her fourth of the season, in the 5th, and Bradely and Kerstyn Tsuruda hit RBI singles in the 6th. However, NCU put the game away in the 6th as Davis hit her third straight homer and fourth of the season, a three-run shot that ended the game by the eight-run “mercy” rule.

Davis' three homers and seven RBIs both set single-game records for NCU.  Hatefi, Robles, and Davis all had three hits, and Bishop had two.  Bradely went 4-4 for the Bruins, scoring two and driving in two, and Briske collected a pair of hits, including a double.

Jenna Royce (1-0) got the win following three innings by starter Kalyssa Koontz, allowing one earned run over three innings to pick up the victory in relief. She struck out three and walked two.

George Fox (3-8) returns to Northwest Conference action Saturday, visiting defending NWC champion Linfield College for a pair at 12:00 noon.  Northwest Christian (4-2) will be back in action Thursday, hosting Lewis & Clark College at 5:00 pm.
