NEWBERG, Ore. – Southpaw Chelsea Bradely spun
a neat six-hit 1-0 shutout for the George Fox University Bruins in
the opener, but the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers bounced back
to win 6-5 for their first victory of the season in the nightcap as
the teams split a Northwest Conference softball doubleheader
Saturday afternoon here at Morse Field.
Bradely (4-11) fanned four and walked one in taking the first
game, besting Kristin Breninger (0-4), who also scattered six hits
while striking out three with one walk. The
Bruins picked up the only run of the game in the 4th when Erin Lee
walked, moved up on a grounder to second, and scored on Kristen
Griffith's double to right.
Kerstyn Tsuruda had half the Bruins' hits with a 3-3 game,
including a double. Caroline DeVincenzi and
Jessica Mullins had two hits each for the Pios.
In the second game, the Pios used a pair of three-run innings to
snap their 12-game season-opening losing skid.
In the top of the 1st, Danielle Blechert hit a three-run homer
following a walk to DeVincenzi and a double by Jamie
Moon. In the 6th, the Pios picked up three
unearned runs on a bases-clearing triple by Sheree Miura after
two-out singles by Blechert and Mullins and an error on Laura
Parker's grounder that kept the inning alive.
George Fox got two runs back in the home half of the 1st when
Tsuruda walked and Griffith homered. Down 6-2,
they scored three more in the 6th but fell a run
short. Bradely singled, Shelby Briske doubled,
and Becka Doyle doubled them both in. Audrey
Dove's single plated Doyle.
Paige McFeeley (1-4) notched the win for the Pios, allowing nine
hits while striking out six and walking two.
Bradely (4-12) also allowed nine safeties but only three earned
runs, fanning seven while passing only one.
Bradely and Doyle had two hits each for the Bruins, as did Moon,
Blechert, and Mullins for the Pios.
George Fox (4-13, NWC 3-7) and Lewis & Clark (1-12, NWC 1-7)
play again Sunday with a twinbill in Portland at 12:00 noon.
