SPOKANE,
Wash. – After losing a 1-0 extra-inning
heartbreaker in the opening game, the George Fox University Bruins
surrendered seven runs in the final two innings of the nightcap and
dropped a 9-1 decision to the Whitworth University Pirates in a
Northwest Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon here
at Marks Field.
George Fox southpaw Chelsea Bradely (4-15) and Whitworth
right-hander Jessica Mangis (5-7) hooked up in a classic
pitchers' duel in the first game. Bradely
allowed only five hits, striking out six while walking one, and
suffered the hard-luck defeat on an unearned run in the last of the
8th. Mangis was even stingier, giving up only
four hits and no walks with 12 strikeouts.
Bradely had surrendered only two hits and got the first two
batters out in the 8th before Whitworth rallied.
Rachel Anderson and Lacey Kerr each grounded singles through the
left side of the infield, putting runners at first and
second. Shannon Carlon then beat out a grounder
near the mound, and Bradely, in her haste to get an out, threw the
ball away, allowing Anderson to bring in the only run of the game.
In the second game, Whitworth scored two in the 1st, then knocked
out Bradely (4-16) with four in the 4th. Kerr
led off the game with a home run, her 5th, for the Pirates and
Carlon, who reached on a single, later scored on a bases-loaded
fielder's choice grounder by Caitlin
Doherty. In the 4th, Mandee Evans scored on a
throwing error, Kerr doubled in a run, and Carlon and Ashley Carey
had RBI singles.
The Bruins picked up their only run of the day in the top of the
5th on a single by Becka Doyle and an RBI double by Shelby
Briske. Before the Bruins could rally, however,
the Pirates ended the game by the eight-run rule in the bottom of
the 5th on a three-run home run by Anderson, her second of the
season, off reliever Erin Lee.
Kerr, Carlon, Sami Parr, and Anderson had two hits apiece in the
Pirates' 11-hit attack. Doyle, with a 2-2
game, was the only Bruin with multiple hits.
Kelsey Ayers (3-5) went the distance on the mound for the Pirates,
spacing six hit with four strikeouts and three walks.
George Fox (4-17, NWC 3-9) and Whitworth (8-12, NWC 4-6) will
conclude their four-game series here Sunday with another twinbill
at 11:00 a.m.
