Box Score 2 NEWBERG, Ore. - Scoring 10 runs total in the
first game and 10 runs in the top of the 6th inning in the second
game, the Whitworth University Pirates captured a Northwest
Conference softball doubleheader from the George Fox University
Bruins 10-0 in five innings and 13-5 in six innings Saturday
afternoon here at Morse Field.
The Pirates wasted no time getting on the board against George
Fox starter Taylor Whitmore (2-9) in the opener. Sami Parr
walked to start the game, Kelsey Ayers singled, Lacey Kerr reached
to load the bases on an error on which Bruin shortstop Becka Doyle
suffered a broken finger, and Jamie Brunner unloaded them with a
shot that just cleared the fence in right-center for her second
home run of the season.
Whitworth added five more in the 2nd, Kerr singling in two runs
and Heather Hesselgesser hitting a three-run home run, her second,
that hit the top of the fence in right and continued on over.
The Pirates picked up their final run in the 4th on a sacrifice fly
by Ashley Carey.
Jessica Mangis (3-3) went the distance to get the win, allowing
three hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Brunner went
3-for-3 to collect a third of the Pirates' hits off Whitmore,
who struck out three and walked three.
In the nightcap, the Pirates picked up two unearned runs in the
1st after George Fox starter Erin Lee (5-6) threw away a two-out
roller up the first base line by Brunner, and got another run in
the 2nd on Natalie Evers' two-out solo home run to center,
her first. After that, Lee settled down to shut out the
Pirates over the next 3.1 innings as her teammates rallied to give
her the lead.
The Bruins struck for three runs in the bottom of the 1st,
Shelby Briske lining a two-run homer to left, her third of the
season, and Bethany Chriss scoring on a two-out throwing error by
Whitworth starter Alyssa Bergquist. Mangis (4-3) replaced
Bergquist to start the last of the 2nd and stood to be the loser
after surrendering the go-ahead run in the 4th and another in the
5th.
George Fox broke a 3-3 tie in the 4th as Amy
Peterson led off with a bunt single and scored on
Kerrianne Davidson's double to left. The Bruins added
an insurance run in the 5th as Shelby Klein and Amy Lepire singled,
Lee sacrificed them along, and Peterson lined a two-out single
through the left side to score Klein.
With her team down 5-3, Brunner dumped a soft single into center
to open the 6th, breaking a string of nine in a row set down by
Lee, and that opened the floodgates. Hesselgesser and Caty
Lieseke grounded singles through the infield to load the bases, and
after Lee fanned Brittany Wisner, Carey delivered a two-run pinch
single up the middle to tie the game 5-5. Evers singled in
the go-ahead run, Parr singled in another, and after an Ayers
single loaded the bases, Kerr hit a sacrifice fly. Brunner
singled again to reload the bases, Hesselgesser hit a two-run
double to center, and Lieseke capped the frame with a three-run
home run to left, her first of the season.
Mangis got the win despite allowing nine hits in 5.0 innings but
stranding eight runners, with one strikeout and two walks.
Lee suffered the setback, allowing 15 hits, 10 of them in the 6th,
with three strikeouts and no walks.
Davidson, Klein, and Peterson all had two hits each for the
Bruins. Parr and Hesselgesser led the Pirates with three hits
apiece, and Brunner, Lieseke, and Evers had two each.
George Fox (7-15, NWC 1-9) and Whitworth (9-9, NWC 3-7), which
extended its winning streak to eight in a row, play another
twinbill here Sunday starting at 12:00 noon.
