FOREST GROVE, Ore. –
Making up a pair of games that were rained out on Apr. 3, the
George Fox University Bruins dropped a
“home-away-from-home” doubleheader to the Pacific
University Boxers 10-1 and 13-0 in Northwest Conference softball
action Wednesday here at Pacific's Sherman/Larkin Stadium.
The games were originally scheduled as George Fox home games,
but with no other weekends available, the Bruins and Boxers agreed
to play in the middle of the week. As the Bruins' field
has no lights, the teams decided to move the games to Pacific and
play in the late afternoon and early evening to avoid missing
classes.
Pacific took an early lead in the opener as Kelly Nishitomi
tripled and scored on a single by Chelsey Chamberlin in the top of
the 1st. The Boxers added four more in the 4th as Lauren Tuey
and Brooke Toy each had two-run singles.
The Bruins got their run in the bottom of the 4th as Shelby
Briske and Shelby Klein singled and Becka Doyle walked to load the
bases. Kerrianne Davidson hit a soft looper
into center and Klein, having to hold up to make sure the Pacific
shortstop did not make a running catch, was forced out at third on
a strong throw by center fielder Stephanie Vanoudenhaegen as Briske
scored.
The Boxers broke the game wide open with five in the 5th.
Jordan Mittelsdorf drove in the first run of the inning with a line
single off the glove of Serena Lee at short, Teri Shigeno singled
in a run, Jessie Garcia stroked a two-run single through the hole
on the left side, and Vanoudenhaegen singled in the final run.
Erin Lee (7-10) took the loss for the Bruins, going 5.0 innings
with two strikeouts and four walks. Chamberlain (9-5) also
went the distance for the Boxers, scattering three hits while
fanning four and walking two. She also had three of the
Boxers' 11 hits, while Vanoudenhaegen had two.
In the nightcap, the Boxers went to the long ball to rout the
Bruins, Brooke Fogwell homering and driving in six runs and Toy
homering twice while driving in five.
Fogwell got the Boxers going with a two-run double in the 1st,
and they added two more in the 2nd on RBI singles by Nishitomi and
Chamberlain. Toy slugged a solo shot in the 3rd, and the
Boxers put it away with eight in the 5th as Toy and Fogwell both
hit grand slam home runs.
Miranda McNealy (10-4) threw a five-hit shutout for the Boxers,
striking out six and walking two. Taylor Whitmore (2-12)
suffered the setback for the Bruins, allowing nine hits and 13
runs, eight earned, in 4.2 innings, with two strikeouts but eight
walks.
Nishitomi, Fogwell, and Toy all had two hits for the Boxers,
while Davidson had a pair of hits, including a double, for the
Bruins.
George Fox (9-22, NWC 3-16) visits Pacific Lutheran University
and Pacific (19-11, NWC 14-4) goes to Whitworth University
Saturday, both playing conference doubleheaders starting at 12:00
noon.
