NEWBERG, Ore. – Completing their
four-game Northwest Conference softball series 24 days late, the
visiting Whitworth University Pirates downed the George Fox
University Bruins 7-0 behind the pitching of Jessica Mangis and the
power of McKenzie Stuby and Heather Hesselgesser Friday afternoon
here at Morse Field.
Whitworth had won the first two games of the series 10-0 and
13-5 back on Mar. 27, and George Fox took a 9-8 10-inning win on
Mar. 28 before rain forced a postponement of the final game until
this weekend. This is the Pirates' last trip of the
season to Oregon, as they will be playing Willamette University in
a four-game set Saturday and Sunday.
Mangis (10-3) tossed a four-hitter, striking out four and
walking none. Shelby Klein had two of the
Bruins' hits off her, including a double. Taylor
Whitmore (2-15) started and took the loss for the Bruins, allowing
seven hits in 3.2 innings and six runs, only two of them
earned. She fanned one and walked two before Erin Lee
finished up with 3.1 innings of one-hit ball, allowing one run with
three strikeouts and a walk.
The Pirates took a 2-0 lead in the 2nd on Stuby's first
home run of the season to left center following a two-out infield
single by Caty Lieseke.
The visitors scored four unearned runs in the 4th after a
two-out dropped fly ball in center opened the floodgates.
Lieseke, who had reached second on the error, scored on two wild
pitches, Sami Parr lined a two-run single to left, and Kelsey Ayers
capped the frame with an RBI double to left center that fell in
when the Bruins' outfielders called each other off the ball.
Hesselgesser drove in the final run of the game with a solo shot
to right center in the 5th off Lee, her fourth round-tripper of the
season.
George Fox (9-27, NWC 3-21) visits Lewis & Clark College and
Whitworth (18-14, NWC 12-12) goes to Willamette Saturday for
conference doubleheaders, both starting at 12:00 noon.
