PORTLAND, Ore. – Bethany
Chriss and Taylor Whitmore homered in a five-run 2nd inning in the
first game and the George Fox University Bruins banged out 15 hits
in the second en route to an 8-1, 8-6 Northwest Conference softball
sweep of the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers Saturday afternoon
here at the Huston Sports Complex.
Erin Lee (8-12) was sharp on the mound for the
Bruins in the opener, pitching a four-hitter with one strikeout and
no walks. The only run she allowed was unearned in the 1st
inning when Jaimie Moon singled, advanced on a sacrifice, and
scored on an error at second.
Lee's teammates scored early and often against Pioneer
starter Caroline DeVincenzi (1-13). In the top of the 1st,
Serena Lee singled for the first of her three hits in the game and
Kerrianne Davidson walked, and both advanced on a wild pitch.
Lee scored on Shelby Klein's fielder's choice grounder,
and Davidson crossed on a sacrifice bunt by Shelby Briske.
In the George Fox 2nd, Amy Lepire and Erin Lee walked, Serena
Lee singled to load the bases, and Davidson unloaded them with a
three-run double to center. Paige McFeeley replaced
DeVincenzi on the hill, and Chriss greeted her with a two-run shot
to left, her sixth of the season. Whitmore hit her first of
the year, a solo drive to left, to close out the scoring in the
3rd.
In the second game, the Bruins got a run in the 1st as Serena
Lee singled, stole second, and scored on Davidson's single up
the middle. The Pios went ahead with a pair in the 2nd as
Caitlin Relyea hit a solo home run and Gabby Castro singled in
Michael Satter.
George Fox took the lead in the 4th on a three-run home run to
center by Becka Doyle, her fourth of the season, with Briske and
Whitmore aboard. The Bruins added two in the 5th as Davidson
scored on a wild pitch and Whitmore singled in Briske, and they
made it 8-2 in the 6th on an RBI double by Serena Lee and single by
Klein that scored Davidson.
Relyea hit her second home run of the game in the 6th, a two-run
blast, though both runs were unearned. The Pios scored
another in the inning on a single by Satter and an RBI double by
Castro to cut the margin to 8-5, and they added an unearned run in
the 7th on an RBI single by Danielle Blechert. However, Erin
Lee in relief got Relyea to hit into a force out at third with two
runners on to preserve the victory.
Whitmore (3-15) went 5.2 innings to get the win, spacing six
hits while allowing four runs, two earned. She fanned two and
walked only one before Lee finished up. Kristen Breninger
(1-9) took the loss for the Pios, allowing seven hits and four
earned runs in 4.0 innings before McFeele y gave up eight hits and
four runs in the final 3.0 innings.
Davidson and Klein led the Bruins' 15-hit attack by going
3-for-4 each, while Doyle, Whitmore, and Serena Lee had two hits
apiece. Castro was 3-for-3 and Relyea had two hits, both
homers, for the Pios.
Both teams conclude their seasons Sunday against each other,
this time with a doubleheader at 12:00 noon at George Fox.
Erin Lee is the only Bruin senior who will playing her final home
games. George Fox is 11-27 overall and 5-21 in the
conference, while Lewis & Clark is 3-34 overall and 0-26 in the
league.
