Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. - Hitting a blistering .352 for
the match with 47 kills and only nine errors all night, the
visiting Concordia University-Portland Cavaliers swept the George
Fox University Bruins 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-15) in a non-conference
women's volleyball match Tuesday here at the Wheeler Sports
Center's Miller Gym.
It was the final non-conference tilt of the season for the
Bruins, who fell to 5-7 with their third consecutive setback.
Concordia improved to 7-6. It was the first meeting between
the two schools since the 1998 season.
Concordia hit .419 in the first set (16-3-31), but George Fox
stayed in the game by hitting a solid .267 (13-5-30). The
Cavaliers never trailed in the set and built up an eight-point lead
of 19-11 on a service ace by Aubrie Concannon before the Bruins
mounted a comeback. An 8-2 run featuring three kills by Eliza Pledger cut the Bruins' disadvantage to two at 21-19 before
consecutive winners by Erika Doremus halted the rally.
Melanie Miller's kill ended the set in the visitors'
favor.
The Cavs hit .294 (16-6-34) to the Bruins' .265 (14-5-34)
in a down-to-the-wire second set. After falling behind 5-1,
the Bruins battled back to tie it 10-10 on a kill by Amanda White,
and eventually took a 19-16 lead on another winner by White.
Concordia rallied to secure 22-22 and 23-23 ties, then clinched the
set with a tandem block by Lindsay Mangan and Mariah Raudsepp and
an ace by Skyler Kamaka.
The Cavaliers played a flawless offensive game in the third set,
making no errors with 15 kills in 43 attempts en route to a .349
hitting percentage. With the Bruins hitting only .114 in the
set (13-8-44), the Cavs bounced back from an early 5-2 deficit with
runs of five and seven points to take a 15-10 lead. The
Bruins trimmed it to two points at 16-14 on an ace by Ali Toedtemeier, but it was their last chance as the Cavs went on a 9-1
run to close out the set and the match.
White led the Bruins with nine kills and a .421 attack
percentage, Isabel Valentine had nine kills and hit .316, and
Pledger posted eight kills with a .412 percentage.
Toedtemeier made 30 assists. On defense, Patti Reeves had 14
digs while Toedtemeier and White had 12 each. The Bruins made
only two blocks all evening, with Pledger assisting on both.
Doremus had 14 kills and hit .522 to lead the Cavaliers, while
Raluca Dinca added 13 kills and hit .312, and Claire Thiel had nine
kills with a .350 percentage. Mangan passed out 37
assists. Dinca and Concannon had 10 digs apiece, and Thiel
had four block assists out of the Cavs' seven team
blocks.
