GEORGE FOX 6-3, PUGET SOUND 0-4: Bruins and Loggers Each Get First NWC Win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TACOMA, Wash. – With George Fox University winning the first game 6-0 and the University of Puget Sound taking the second game 4-3 with a last-of-the-seventh rally, both the Bruins and the Loggers picked up their first Northwest Conference softball victories of the season with a doubleheader split Friday afternoon here at East Field.

In the first game, Erin Hento (5-3) earned the complete-game win for the Bruins, allowing just four hits and fanning seven.  Jennifer Davis (0-1) took her first career start for the Loggers and tossed 4.2 innings, allowing six hits and one earned run while striking out three, before Aryn Grause finished up.

The Bruins took the lead with a pair of runs in the third as Nicole Renteria reached on an error and eventually scored on Kerrianne Davidson's forceout grounder, followed by Kayla Ward's single that scored Kris Trindle.  They broke the game open in the fourth when Kahlee Barrio doubled in Felicia Chavez and Bethany Chriss stoked a two-run single.  Their final run came in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Renteria that scored Hilary Broadus.

Chavez was the only player in the game with multiple hits, going 3-for-4.

In the nightcap, the Bruins scored all their runs in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.  Davidson doubled in Trindle, who had singled, to tie the game 1-1, Shelby Briske was hit by a pitch to force in Chriss with the go-ahead run, and Chavez came through with another RBI single to score Davidson.

After scoring just one run through the first 13 innings, the Loggers finally broke through in the seventh to pull out the win.  Carolyn Moore led off with a single to left, Grause looped a single to center, and Chrissy Atterson singled to load the bases.  Christina Demuelenaere poked a one-out single up the middle to drive in two and tie the game 3-3. Anthea Aasen then grounded a single to right to score pinch-runner Megan Janes with the game-winner.

Auriel Sperberg (1-5) earned the complete-game win, tallying nine strikeouts and allowing five hits. Hento (5-4) took the loss in relief of Bruin starter Allyssa DenDekker.

Atterson and Demuelenaere each had two hits for the Loggers, while Davidson had a pair of safeties for the Bruins.

NEXT: George Fox (6-10, NWC 1-5) hosts Willamette University Saturday and Sunday, with doubleheaders each day starting at 12:00 noon ... Puget Sound (1-9, NWC 1-5) entertains Pacific University Saturday at noon.
