Box Score TACOMA, Wash. – Despite a match-high 19
kills by Erin Campbell, the George Fox University
Bruins were unable to prevent University of Puget Sound coach Mark
Massey from getting his 300th win at the school as they fell 3-1
(25-18, 25-21, 20-25, 25-13) to the Loggers in Northwest Conference
women's volleyball Friday night here at Memorial
Fieldhouse.
The Loggers, ranked 15th in the latest American Volleyball
Coaches Association NCAA Division III poll, jumped out to a quick
9-2 lead in the first set behind a pair of kills each from Marissa
Florant and the NWC's kills leader, Jackie Harvey, and never
trailed. The Bruins finally settled down and, led by three
kills from Campbell and one from Cassie Irwin in a 4-1 outburst,
climbed within three at 19-16. Winners by Harvey and Kristin
Best and a block by Best and Jenni Brehove slowed the Bruin
comeback, and the Loggers finished off the set with another spike
by Harvey.
Kills by Lucy Capron and Irwin around a block by Irwin and Kylee
Adderson enabled the Bruins to take a 3-1 lead in the second set,
and they maintained a one-to-three-point lead for a majority of the
time, though the Loggers managed to tie it four times before they
went ahead. A kill by the Loggers' Nicolette Reynaud
and a service ace by Christina Chun tied it for the last time at
17-17, and the home team followed with four more unanswered points,
including kills by Harvey and Florant, to take a 21-17 lead they
would not relinquish. Florant hit the final winner.
After allowing the Loggers to hit over.300 in each of the first
two sets, the George Fox defense tightened up in the third set and
limited them to a .152 percentage. After ties on every number
from one through six, the Bruins took the lead for good on a UPS
attack error and a kill by Capron. A 10-2 run shortly
thereafter, fueled by two kills apiece by Capron and Campbell,
built the Bruin bulge to 20-11, and Campbell won three straight
points on a kill and two service aces that made it 24-19.
Jessie Vahalla had the final winning putdown for the Bruins.
The Bruins were still hopeful of sending the match to a fifth
game after they rallied from an early 9-5 deficit in the fourth
set, benefitting from three straight UPS attack errors, to get
within one at 10-9. They were still within range at 15-13
following a Logger ball handling error, but that was the last time
the Bruins scored. The Loggers gained the serve on a block by
Reynaud and Danielle Westerman, and Karly Edwards served nine
straight winning points to close out the match. Edwards had
three aces in the run and Florant hit three winners, including the
match's final point.
Campbell led all hitters with a season-high 19 kills for the
Bruins, while Capron chipped in with 14 and Irwin added 10.
The Bruins hit .146 (47-22-171) for the match. Payton Shrum
handed out 44 assists. Chelsea Wilson made a match-high 24
digs, with Campbell adding 19, Capron 16, and Irwin 11.
Adderson had three block assists as the Bruins played without
middle blocker Tiffany Burk, who is fourth in the conference in
blocks and second in hitting percentage but was held out pending
results of testing for a possible concussion received during a team
practice
Florant paced Puget Sound with 18 kills and Harvey had 15, with
Brehove contributing 45 assists. The Loggers hit .222
(55-17-171) as a team. Florant also led the Loggers with 18
digs, followed by Harvey with 17, Chun 15, Brehove 14, and Edwards
12. Brehove was in on five of the team's eight
blocks.
