Box Score 2 PORTLAND, Ore. – Felicia
Chavez drilled a go-ahead two-run homer in the first game and
Kerrianne Davidson slugged a grand slam in the
second game, powering the George Fox University Bruins past the
Lewis & Clark College Pioneers 5-1 and 10-0 in a Northwest
Conference softball doubleheader Friday afternoon here at the
Huston Sports Complex.
The twinbill was a makeup of games that were rained out on Mar.
10-11 as part of a four-game series, of which only one game was
played, a 2-1 George Fox win on Mar. 10. No makeup date has
been set for the fourth and final game of the series.
Game 1 - George Fox 5, at Lewis & Clark
1
Pitchers Erin Hento (5-4) for George Fox and Madison Hollenbeck
(0-9) for Lewis & Clark matched zeroes for three innings in the
opener before the Bruins broke through in the top of the 4th.
McKenzie Beeson walked to lead off the frame and Chavez stroked her
third round tripper of the season to right for a 2-0 Bruin
lead.
The Pioneers got their only run in the home half of the 3rd as
Taylor Gatti singled, stole second, advanced to third on a deep fly
to right, and scored on Caitlin Relyea's infield single off
the glove of Mckynna Towery at short.
The Bruins added three insurance runs in the 5th. Kris
Trindle led off with a single and was sacrificed to second, Towery
walked, and Genetta Bennett singled to left to score Trindle.
Davidson doubled down the left-field line to score Towery, and
Nicole Renteria singled to left as Bennett scored.
Hento scattered five hits, striking out two with no walks.
Hollenbeck allowed 10 hits, fanning four and walking three.
Trindle had three of the hits off her, while Davidson and Renteria
had two each.
The game ended on a bizarre note. Caitlin McCormick
singled and Amanda Rabith reached on an error at short to start the
bottom of the 7th inning for the Pios. After Natalie Rose
popped out, Caitlin Basilio hit a liner to center that Trindle dove
for and appeared to catch momentarily, but the ball popped out of
her glove as she rolled over and was ruled a non-catch.
However, pinch runner Maddie Lee retreated to second, thinking the
ball had been caught, and was forced out at second. Basilio,
meanwhile, also thought Trindle had made the catch and retreated
immediately to the dugout, where she was called out for abandoning
the baseline, resulting in a Bruin double play to end the game.
Game 2 - George Fox 10, at Lewis & Clark
0
The Bruins collected 12 hits off two Lewis & Clark pitchers
in the nightcap and exploded for six runs in the 6th to blow the
game open, shortening it to six runs due to the 'mercy
rule'. The offensive outburst benefitted three Bruin
hurlers, starter Allyssa DenDekker (4-3) getting the win with four
innings of five-hit shutout ball along with two strikeouts and no
walks. Rachel Fielder and Taylor Whitmore went one inning
each to complete the whitewash.
The Bruins scored twice in the 3rd to pin the loss of Pioneer
starter Rose (0-9). A single by Trindle and walks to Jenny
Milton and Beeson loaded the bases. Davidson hit a foul pop
down the left-field line on which Caroline DeVincenzi at short made
a fine running catch, but Trindle was able to tag up and
score. When the other runners tried to advance on
DeVincenzi's throw to the plate, catcher McCormick made a
wild throw to third, allowing Milton to score. In the Bruin
5th, Chriss and Beeson hit back-to-back doubles for one run,
Davidson bunted for a hit as Beeson went to third, and Kirsten
Ankeny's grounder to short scored Beeson.
The Bruins put the game away with their six in the 6th.
Hallie Knife took over for Rose to start the inning and retired no
one, giving up a singles to Renteria and Trindle and walking Milton
to load the bases. Chriss singled for one run, and Beeson
walked to force in another. Rose returned to the mound to
replace Knife, and was promptly greeted with a bases-clearing liner
over the left-field fence by Davidson, her second home run of the
season and second grand slam of her career.
Renteria had three hits for the Bruins, while Trindle, Chriss,
and Davidson had two each. Trindle, Milton, Chris and Beeson
scored two runs apiece, and Davidson collected five RBIs.
