Koontz went the distance in game one while Jenna Royce and Brooke
Davis combined on a one-hitter in the second game as the Northwest
Christian University Beacons blanked the George Fox University
Bruins 2-0 and 4-0 in a non-conference softball doubleheader
Wednesday afternoon here at James Park.
Game 1 - at Northwest Christian 2, George Fox

In the opener, Koontz (2-10) scattered six hits while striking
out four to pick up her first complete-game shutout of the season.
Only once did she allow more than one base runner in an inning,
fighting out of a two-on, one-out jam in the top of the 7th.
McKenzie Beeson walked and Mckynna Towery singled
to put the tying runs aboard before Koontz got two ground ball outs
to seal the win/
The Beacons scored both of their runs in the bottom of the 6th
on a solo home run by Gabby Stover, her fifth of the season, and an
RBI single by Chelsea Hannon to score Megan Mazanec. Hannon
had two of the Beacons' seven hits in the game.
Erin Hento went the first four innings for George Fox, allowing
three hits with two strikeouts and a walk, before Taylor Whitmore
(1-3) finished up and took the loss. Only one of the runs she
surrendered was earned.
Game 2 - at Northwest Christian 4, George Fox

The Beacons' strong pitching carried over to the nightcap
as Royce pitched the first three innings without allowing a hit
while striking out three. Davis (1-0) followed up with four innings
of one-hit relief to get the win, striking out three. Genetta
Bennett got the Bruins' lone hit, a one-out single in the
5th.
The Beacons got to work early on the offensive end, scoring
their first run in the bottom of the 1st. Addy Hoskins led off with
a single and later came home on an RBI single by Amanda Reiss.
Davis made it 2-0 in the 3rd when she popped her third home run of
the season over the left-field fence. In the 4th, two more
runs scored as Dani Gehrke's double brought home JoElla
Smith, and Gehrke later scored on a wild pitch.
Allyssa DenDekker (4-4) surrendered eight hits to the Beacons in
3.1 innings and all their runs. Rachel Fielder relieved her
and allowed one hit over 2.2 innings with a strikeout and a
walk.
Smith ended the game going 2-for-3, while Reiss posted the first
three-hit game of her career with a 3-for-3 line.
NEXT: George Fox (14-13) returns home to host
Pacific University in Northwest Conference doubleheaders on
Saturday and Sunday, starting at 12:00 noon both days ... Northwest
Christian (6-19) gets back into Cascade Collegiate Conference
action Friday with a 2:00 p.m. twinbill at Corban University, which
is currently ranked 23rd in the NAIA.
