Box Score 2 THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Concluding play
in the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational women's volleyball
tournament with yet another split, the George Fox University Bruins
edged the Occidental College Tigers 3-2 but then fell 3-1 to the
University of Redlands Bulldogs Saturday here at California
Lutheran University's Soiland Gym.
Game 1 – George Fox 3, Occidental 2 (25-21, 25-21,
17-25, 23-25, 15-9)
Tiffany Burk and Erin Campbell combined for 34
kills as the Bruins ended the Tigers' four-game winning
streak and handed them only their second loss of the season.
George Fox hit .275 and .217 to win the first two sets, but the
offense deserted the Bruins in the next two as they hit only .052
and .080. The Bruins pulled away in the deciding set as their
hitting touch returned, posted a .304 attack percentage.
In addition the 17 kills apiece by Burk and Campbell, Erin
Sprowls chipped in with nine winners and Kylee Adderson added
eight. Payton Shrum and Chelsea Brustad set up the offense
with 30 and 19 assists each. The Bruins defensively had 94
digs and 12 blocks. Chelsea Wilson had her second 30-plus
digs match this season with 35, with Brustad making 13 and Campbell
and Brooke Sturdevant 12 each. Burk had eight blocks, one
solo, Sprowls was in on five, and Emily Rawlings added four.
Occidental, whose final stats are currently unavailable, fell to
6-2 on the season, while George Fox moved (temporarily) to 4-2.
Game 2 – Redlands 3, George Fox 1 (25-21, 25-18,
25-27, 25-19)
After dropping the first two sets to the Bulldogs, the Bruins
rallied from a 23-17 deficit to win the third set, but could not
complete the comeback as Redlands rallied from an early 5-1 deficit
in the fourth set and went on to win the match.
Karlee Jo Sampson led a trio of Bruins with double-digit kills,
tallying 16, with Bruk and Sprowls adding 10 apiece. Shrum
had 29 assists and Brustad 19. On defense, Wilson had 25
digs, giving her 94 in the tournament and moving her past Jamie
Suehiro (1,042, 1991-93) and Rachel Evans (1,051, 1995-98) into
ninth on the Bruin career digs list with 1,088. Sampson
contributed 14 digs, Shrum 11, and Campbell 10. Burk had one
solo block, giving her 12 in the tournament and raising her career
total to 196; she passed Eliza Pledger (187, 2009-10), and Jeni
Nelson (194, 2000-03) this week to move into eighth on the all-time
blocks chart.
Redlands' stats were unavailable at this time. The
Bulldogs improved to 3-4 on the season, while George Fox, which was
2-2 in the tournament, is now 4-3.
NEXT: George Fox returns home to host New
Hope Christian College Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Bruins opened
the season with a 3-1 win over the Deacons on Aug. 30 in Eugene,
Ore.
