Hylton and Baylee Westrick slugged home runs in a 10-0
first-game win and Courtney Howard singled in the winning run in a
6-5 nine-inning second-game win as the George Fox University Bruins
swept the University of Puget Sound Loggers in a Northwest
Conference softball doubleheader Sunday afternoon here at Morse
Field.
George Fox snapped a six-game losing streak and improved to
21-12 overall and 10-11 in the conference. The Bruins have
now equaled the record for the most wins in a season, joining the
1994 team which went 21-8 and won both the Northwest Conference of
Independent Colleges and NAIA District 2 titles. They also
gave head coach Jessica Hollen her most wins in her sixth season at
George Fox; the Bruins were 20-22 for her in 2012. Puget
Sound fell to 2-26 overall and 1-21 in the NWC as their losing
streak reached seven.
Game 1 - at George Fox 10, Puget Sound 0
The Bruins banged out five extra-base hits among their nine
total hits to back the combined four-hit pitching of Erin Hento
(10-6) and Amanda Woods in the five-inning opener. Hento
worked four innings, allowing only two hits with a walk and five
strikeouts before Woods pitched the 7th.
The Bruins struck for five runs in the 1st off Megan Campbell
(0-14), who went the distance, fanning three and walking
four. Howard hit a sacrifice fly, Becca Olson doubled in a
run, Megan Furtado had an RBI single, and two runs scored on errors
as the Bruins sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning.
Hylton slammed her third home run to left in the 3rd, scoring
Westrick and Furtado. Westrick closed the scoring with her
sixth round tripper in the 4th after Sophie Haugen had been hit by
a pitch. Hylton finished with a 3-for-3 game with two runs
scored and three RBIs, while Westrick was 2-for-2, including a
double, with two runs and two RBIs.
Game 2 - at George Fox 6, Puget Sound 5 (9
inn.)
In the nightcap, the Bruins' Allyssa DenDekker and the
Loggers' Jaci Young (2-10) matched zeroes for four innings
before the visitors scored four times in the 5th. Olivia
Turner singled in Marissa Jeffers with the first run, and Young
connected for her second home run with two runners aboard to cap
the inning.
The Bruins battled back to take the lead in the last of the 5th.
Kayla Anderson singled, Woods was hit by a pitch, and Howard
singled to load the bases. Olson's sacrifice fly to
left scored one run, Kelsey Hansen lined a two-run double to
right-center, and Westrick doubled down the left-field line to
score Ashley Bunce with the tying run. Megan Furtado's
single up the middle scored Westrick with the go-ahead run.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Lisa Colombo tied the game
with her first home run to left leading off the 6th.
Hento (11-6) replaced DenDekker to start the 7th and pitched
three shutout innings, scattering four hits with four strikeouts to
pick up her second win of the day. It came in the 9th when
Anderson drew a lead-off walk, wheeled to third on Woods'
single to right-center, and scored the game-winner on
Howard's base hit up the middle.
Young finished with six strikeouts and three walks, allowing 12
hits. Anderson, Howard, Hansen and Westrick had two hits
each, Westrick adding two more doubles, while Tracy Jones and
Jeffers each had two hits for the Loggers.
