Bruins Score 26 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep of Carleton

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

By: Ryan Lackey

TUSCON, Ariz. --- With two mercy-rule wins over Carleton on Tuesday, the Bruins finished up their Arizona trip with a 7-1 record and plenty of momentum to take back to Oregon. Madison Sorensen threw a complete-game shutout in the first game, which the Bruins won 12-0, while Rebecca Pridmore drove in five runs to spark the Bruins to a 14-4 win in game two.

Recap:

Game One
It took the Bruins a few innings to get going at the plate, but that was fine for Sorensen, who allowed just three hits and struck out nine. The Bruins manufactured a run in the first when Kayla Anderson singled and eventually crossed home on Amanda Woods's RBI groundout.

With Sorensen steaming through the Carleton lineup, there things were quiet until the fourth, when the Bruins loaded the bases with two outs. An error brought in the second run for the Bruins, and more importantly extended the inning for Courtney Howard, who banged out a triple to score three more.

The Bruins capped their 5-0 lead after four with a seven-run fifth. With RBI doubles from Tia Uyehara, Annie Veatch (whose double knocked in two), and Kimi Ito, plus an RBI single from Julia Apodaca, the Bruins scored five runs before Carleton recorded the first out. RBI singles from Tawny Becker and Kassia Brown put the Bruins up 12-0, which held as the final score.

Game Two
The Bruins continued right where they stopped as game two began. In the first inning, after an error and a walk put on leadoff batter Uyehara and second-hole hitter Kat Hylton, Howard shot a double into the gap to score the Bruins's first run. Two more errors let the Bruins run their lead to 3-0, and then, with the bases loaded, Pridmore rifled a double down the line to score three more. The score was 6-0 Bruins after the first.

Unlike the first game, in the nightcap the Bruins went pitcher-by-committee. Alyssa Harris, the starter, got the win after working two innings and giving up three runs, all of which came in the second inning, as Carleton got three off of a fielder's choice, passed ball, and dropped third strike. Melissa Charron and Alyssa Parra, who relieved Harris, were sharper, holding Carleton to just one more run: a Molly Steinberg homer in the fourth.

The Bruins, though, were far from sated. Pridmore singled in another run in the third, and she was followed by Uyahara, whose double scored two more. Then, in the fourth, the Bruins hit double-digits, 10-4, as Woods singled in Howard. Three straight RBI singles from Apodaca, Pridmore, and Uyehara, topped off by a Hylton sacrifice fly, gave the Bruins a 14-4 win.

Top Performers:

Game One
Howard led with three RBIs as part of her 1-2 day. Veatch was 1-3 with two runs knocked in, plus a run scored. Ito finished 3-4 with two runs and an RBI. Sorensen struck out nine, nearly half of the batters she faced.

Game Two
Pridmore had a career day, going 3-3 with five RBIs and a run scored. Uyehara also shined, driving in three runs and recording two hits. Howard was 2-3 with two runs and an RBI.
