Bruins Split with Loggers, Win Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

By: Ryan Lackey

NEWBERG, Ore. --- After sweeping yesterday's doubleheader with Puget Sound, the Bruins had a slight hiccup on Saturday, losing the first game 4-3 on a three-run Puget Sound third, before rebounding to take the second game, 7-3.

Recap:

Game One
Starter Abbie Bergerson put in a serviceable three innings of work. The Bruins gave her a lead in the second, when two singles and a groundout put runners on second and third for Kat Hylton, whose clutch single to right brought in Sara Miller, pinch-running for Amanda Woods.

But in the bottom of the third Puget Sound posted a crooked number on the scoreboard. With the bases loaded and one out, Bergerson induced a sacrifice fly from Jessica Gott, doing well to trade a run for an out. But the next batter, Mckenna Johnson, doubled to left, and two runs came in.

Trailing 3-1, the Bruins drew within one in the fifth, when Kayla Anderson singled and came all the way around from first to score on Courtney Howard's single to left.

Then, in the sixth, the Bruins evened the game at 3-3. Batting with the bases loaded, Tawny Becker's sharply hit fielder's choice let Ashley Bunce race home with the tying run.

But in the sixth, with Alyssa Harris pitching, the Loggers loaded the bases, and Harris uncorked a wild pitch Howard couldn't rein in, and Jaci Young scored the winning run for Puget Sound.

Game Two
The Bruins did their best to take the second game as early as possible, and they were helped considerably by two home runs from Kayla Anderson. After two quiet innings, the Bruins blew up in the third for five runs. Anderson ripped a solo homer, Becker doubled in two runs, and an error and a passed ball let in two more.

A five-run lead proved plenty for starter Madison Sorensen, who worked all seven innings. In the top of the fourth, Anderson hit another solo homer, and though Sorensen gave up a single run in the bottom of the fourth and another in the sixth, the Loggers never threatened to take the lead.

Another homer, this one from Bunce, sealed the game in the top of the seventh, and the Bruins claimed a 7-3 win.
