Bruins Battle Back to Earn Sunday Split with Boxers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

By: Ryan Lackey

FOREST GROVE, Ore. --- After Saturday's even match, the Bruins split their Sunday doubleheader with Pacific too, each team carrying away two wins and two losses from the four-game weekend set. In the first game Sunday, Pacific's Marissa Reichard was dazzling, throwing a complete-game four-hitter, stifling the Bruins en route to a 6-0 win. In the nightcap the Bruins had vengeance, battling back in another low-scoring affair to take a 3-2 win in eight innings, centerpieced by a Courtney Howard homer.

Recap:

Game One
The Boxers got to Bruin starter Abbie Bergerson in the first inning. After Reichard set the Bruins down in order in the top of the first, the Boxers notched two runs on Kylee Yamamoto's RBI single and an error.

Playing from behind, the Bruins never quite got going against Reichard. They found some success in the third, when Courtney Howard led off with a double, and then with two outs Kimi Ito singled to put runners on the corners, but the Bruins were unable to grab a run.

Pacific added another in the fourth Trisha Snydar singled in Rachel Roberts. Then, in the fifth, the Boxers stretched their lead to 6-0 with three more runs; Reichard helped her own cause with an RBI triple. She then got three outs in the seventh to complete her shutout.

Game Two
Sorensen and Bergerson combined excellently: Sorensen threw the first six-plus innings, holding the Boxers to two runs, one earned, before Bergerson came on to close things out. Sorensen's mistake came in the fourth, when she allowed a solo homer to Ashley Mitchell, which put the Bruins down, 1-0.

But, unlike in the first game, the Bruins found their bats. In the sixth, Anderson, leading off, singled to center. Next up was Howard, who blasted a two-run homer to give the Bruins a sudden lead. The Bruins nearly had more, but Cassie Apple wriggled her way out of the jam.

Then, in the bottom of the seventh, the Boxers escaped by manufacturing a run to tie the game: Quirena Natividad singled, advanced on an error, and scored on Nalani Antonio's single to head into extra innings.

But the Bruins immediately retook the lead: Amanda Woods led off the eighth with a double, and Annie Veatch followed with another double, plating Woods. Bergerson set down the Boxers, and the Bruins had a well-fought 3-2 win.

Top Performers:

Game One
The Bruins did flash some power: Kayla Anderson led off the fourth with a triple, and Howard doubled in the third. Only four of the Boxers's six runs were charged to Bergerson, who struck out four.

Game Two
Once again, Howard's power was key: she finished 1-4 with the two-run homer. Woods went 3-4 with a run. Veatch was 2-3 with two doubles and an RBI.

What It Means:
The Bruins are 22-11 on the season, 11-9 in conference.

What Comes Next:
Next weekend, the Bruins host a four-game series with Willamette.
