Bruins Open Season With A Split

LA VERNE, Calif. --- It was a tale of two games for the George Fox softball team to open up the 2017 season, as the Bruins split a double-header with La Verne.

Recap: 
Game One:
Tia Uyehara accounted for the first run of 2017 with a solo homerun in the top of the third inning to break the 0-0 tie. Later in the inning, Kimi Ito scored on a groundout by Alex Parker. 

Madison Sorensen was given the ball to start game one of the double-header and was supported with an abundance of offense. She struck out seven hitters in six innings pitched, allowing three runs on four hits. 

After La Verne got a runner across in the bottom of the fourth, the Bruins added to their lead. Alyssa Gonzalez's sacrifice fly and Rachel LaRont's two run single pushed the lead to 5-1 after five innings of play.

The Bruins added insurance in the seventh, as Allison Meyer scored on a bases loaded walk and Tristan Cozo came home on another RBI from Uyehara. Despite giving up two runs in the bottom of the seventh, the Bruins held on to win, 7-5. 

Game Two:
The Bruins struggled from the plate in game two, scattering six hits across seven innings.

La Verne was aggressive at the plate early, getting two runs off of Abbie Bergerson in the bottom of the first. Gonzalez scored the only run of the game for the Bruins on a solo homer in the top of the second. 

La Verne continued to attack as the game wore on, scoring runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings. 

The Bruins had opportunities but stranded runners late as La Verne took the second game by a score of 6-1.

Top Performers:
Game One:

The Bruins got production from four different hitters. LaRont led with three RBIs on three hits and Uyehara began the season with a two RBI performance. Ito scored twice and Sorensen seven strikeouts were a game high. 

Game Two:
Gonzalez was the bright spot in game two with her first homerun of the season. She totaled an RBI in each game of the afternoon.

What It Means:
The Bruins began the 2017 campaign with a split in the first double-header of the season. 

What Comes Next:
The Bruins will continue their California trip Saturday, Feb. 4, as they are set for a double-header with Occidental. First pitch of game one is set for 12 p.m. Game two is scheduled for 2:15 p.m.
