Veatch Leads Bruins In Wins Over Loggers

WEST LINN, Ore. --- Powered by the bat of Annie Veatch, the George Fox softball team picked up two victories Saturday afternoon, taking down the Puget Sound Loggers by scores of 11-3 and 9-6.

Recap:
Game One:

The Bruins wasted no time in the first inning, jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead. With one swing of the bat, Veatch's home run gave the Bruins a 3-0 lead. After a double from Alex Parker, a home run from Savannah Vargas added two more runs. 

The Loggers picked up two in the top of the second inning but the Bruins countered with another two of their own of Kimi Ito's two-run homer.

Madison Sorensen went five innings giving up just five hits and striking out five on her way to her sixth win of the season.

The Bruins extended their lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Veatch and took an 8-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth. Roni Braun's two run single gave the Bruins a 10-3 lead, and Alyssa Gonzalez's single drove in Vargas.

The 11-3 lead gave the Bruins the run-rule victory in the sixth inning of the first game of the doubleheader. 

Game Two:
Parker's solo home run in the bottom of the second gave the Bruins an early lead. In the following inning Veatch, Ito and Allison Meyer each drove in a run before Vargas' home run gave the Bruins a 6-0 lead.

The Loggers got two runs across in the top of the fourth inning on a two RBI single. After Ito's RBI groundout in the bottom of the inning, the Bruins took a 7-2 lead.

After both teams went scoreless in the fifth, Parker and Veatch each brought home a run to extend the lead to 9-3. 

The Loggers cut the lead in half after a three run home run in the top of the seventh, but that was the extent of their rally, the Bruins took game two by a score of 9-6.

Top Performers:
Game One:

Veatch led the Bruins at the plate, going 3 for 4 with four RBIs. Ito, Braun and Vargas each drove in two runs, and the Bruins 14 team hits is the most in a game this season. With her first inning home run, Vargas brought her season total to four, tied for tops in the NWC. Sorensen went five innings and struck out five to earn her sixth win of the season.

Game Two:
The Bruins followed their 14 hit performance in game one with another 14 hit outing as nine players recorded at least one hit. Ito, Parker, Veatch and Vargas tallied two RBIs apiece, bringing each player to double-digit RBI on the season. Abbie Bergerson pitched a complete game to earn her third win of the season.

What It Means:
The Saturday sweep brings the Bruins' record to 10-6 and 6-4 in NWC play.

What Comes Next:
The Bruins and Loggers return to action Sunday, March 19, for another doubleheader at Rosemont Middle School in West Linn, Oregon. Game one is set to begin at 12 p.m.
