SPOKANE --- The women's volleyball team of George Fox finished its season series against the Whitworth Pirates on Friday, Oct. 19, with a 3-1 loss at Whitworth Fieldhouse.

George Fox got off to a good start in the match a 10-8 lead in the first set, but Whitworth rallied to re-take the lead after breaking a 13-13 tie moments later. The Pirates slowly grew their lead after the midpoint of the set one and took the opener with a 25-20 final score.

The second set was a battle from start to finish as the teams traded side outs, kills, and errors. In the end, however, a late Pirates push gave the home team a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-23 final in set two.

The Bruins flipped that script in set three to take force a fourth stanza with a 25-23 win in the third set. After trailing late in the third, 21-17, the Bruins outscored the Pirates 8-2 in the final stretch for a comeback win.

The Pirates shut the door early in the fourth, however, as they opened the set with an 11-3 performance. The Bruins put together a furious rally in the final moments but the Pirates' lead was too large to overcome in a 25-17 loss that ended the evening.

Top Performers

Danyle Dupray and Laney Search led the Bruins with eight kills each. Search and Madison Ross dealt 16 assists apiece for the Bruins. Emily Carson, Sophia Lawrence, and Dupray each produced 10 digs for the Bruins in the loss.

What It Means

The Bruins are three matches below .500 at 8-11 overall with five matches remaining, all against Northwest Conference competition. George Fox is now 2-9 against NWC opponents in its 2018 season.
