PORTLAND --- The No. 19-ranked George Fox softball team swept Lewis & Clark on the road Saturday, winning game one, 19-2, and game two, 6-0.
Recap:
Game One:
The Bruins exploded onto the scoreboard with five runs in the top of the second inning. With the bases stacked, Aaliyah Kautz singled to center field to record two RBIs. Annie Veatch walked to first to stack the bases once again, and Roni Braun also walked to allow Rebecca Pridmore to reach home. Savannah Vargas completed the inning with a single to right field to score two more for the Bruins.
George Fox kept the pressure on, scoring a whopping eight runs in the top of the fourth inning. Veatch got it going with a single to right center field, then advanced to second on the throw to send Pridmore home. Kimi Ito, Alyssa Gonzalez, Alex Parker, and Braun all managed to get it done at the plate as each of them allowed runners to score. Pridmore capped off the onslaught with her first career home run to bring home three runs to give the Bruins a 13-0 lead.
Lewis & Clark responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to bring the score to 13-2.
The Bruins refused to be stopped in this one, scratching across six runs in the top of the fifth. Vargas started it off with a double to right center field to bring home a run. Parker followed up strong with an RBI single of her own. Ito managed to reach home on a passed ball to keep it going for George Fox. Allison Meyer and Julia Apodaca each sent runners home as well, capping off a massive six-run inning.
The home team could not respond in the bottom of the fifth as the Bruins took game one in a 19-2 mercy-rule victory.
Game Two:
Veatch came out with a huge home run in the top of the first to get the Bruins on the board early.
Gonzalez hit a home run in the top of the fourth, scoring both herself and Vargas to set the score at 3-0.
The Bruins kept it up in the top of the fifth as Veatch hit an RBI double to left center field, allowing Pridmore to score.
George Fox scratched across a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away. Vargas stepped up to the plate and hit a two-RBI double to right center field to advance Braun and Madelynn Vallejo.
The Bruins took game two, 6-0.
Top Performers:
Game One:
Pridmore was on fire in game one, going 2-4 at the plate for three runs and three RBIs. Vargas was hot as well, going 3-4 at the plate and tallying two runs and three RBIs. Kautz, Braun, Parker, and Meyer all chipped in with two RBIs apiece. Sorensen recorded her 12th win of the season in her three innings of work, allowing just one hit.
Game Two:
Veatch got it done in game two, going 3-4 at the plate for two RBIs along with a home run. Gonzalez had a home run also, as both she and Vargas chipped in two RBIs. Abbie Bergerson outpitched her opponent, tallying four strikeouts while not allowing a single run.
What It Means:
The Bruins move to 19-5 overall and 10-2 in conference play.
What Comes Next:
The Bruins play games three and four of the series at Lewis & Clark Sunday, March 25 with game one set for 12:00 pm and game two set for 2:00 pm.
